Hi,

I have a 2015 Mini Cooper S Convertible. I think that makes it an R57. I bought the car over a year ago from the dealer as a certified pre-owned ( It was previously on a 2 year lease). When I bought the car the paddle shifters both worked. We don't use them much. Now neighther of them work at all. These set of paddles have no symbols on them, and are designed to both do same thing. For example if you pull , it upshifts, and pushing downshifts. It does not matter if you use left of right side, they both are supposed to do same thing.

Currently, both paddle shifters do nothing. We tested it from Automatic D mode, and from DS mode, and from Manual mode and in different speeds. Normally if it was working, you would see on the display the M come on and the different numbers like M2, M3, etc.
Both paddle shifters are dead and don't do anything. I also tried on highway speed in Manual mode, and paddles do nothing. I ended up having to use the floor shifter to do everything for now. I noticed the new Mini's don't have the paddle shifters.

Any clues on what problem is or how to fix? Is this possible a broken wire somewhere? Any help appreciated.

 

Fuse check?
There is a control module somewhere which I know nothing about.

Probably one of those two items. I'd check all the fuses first.

 

I did this a few days ago already but could not figure it out. There are two fuse boxes in this min. One in engine bay and one in front passenger plastic panel under glove box. I looked there but I have no idea what I'm looking for. I can't tell which would be for shifters.

Could you narrow it down more , like is it engine bay box or in passgers fuse box and also which am looking for , what amp would it be ?

Based on looking at symbols on door display of fuse boxes, none seem to be for transmission as I can see. I would need more specific info to find it.

 

Check here https://www.newtis.info for fuse info and perhaps some troubleshooting on the issue.

 

Find a shop with ISTA and have it scanned. If it's a short it'll show on the computer. Way easier than tracking a problem blind.

 

hi,thanks for suggestion, is there a cheap Amazon ISTA scanner that could be used for finding a possible short.

Separately, I was watching some BMW videos where it showed that wires in floor shifter were so tight and short that it caused them to break over time with normal use of floor shifter and this led to issues in BMW which were repaired by splicing wires back together. so i got idea that maybe these paddles shifters also have wires that go down to floor shifter between the seats and maybe this could have happened.

Is this not a problem anyone else has experienced? I'm wondering if anyone else ever had Paddle Shifter in 2015 Mini Cooper S convertible or model similar to this fail on paddle shifters?

There does not appear to be anything wrong with stuff in the fuse boxes on the mini.

Is there the way to test the actual Paddle shifters unit that is in the steering wheel? For example if the paddle shifter unit was exposed, is there a good test that could be done on the wires/wire plug there, to test for proper resistance and continuity?

I believe part #4 in this diagram is the Paddle shifter unit in the steering column.

Having reread the original post I realize that you should be covered under warranty. Let them figure it out if still covered.

 

i bought it in 2017 July I think. It was a lease return from someone who had it for 2 years. it's 2019 now so I have some warranty still.
