R60 14' Battery Issues
14' Battery Issues
So the last week I've had the dreaded Mini on a lift warning in my "14 CMS. After a few day I started to notice the ignition sequence was taking a bit longer. Long story short got my battery check'd and it has a bad cell. I'm gonna call my local mini to see if a replacement would be covered under warranty since they can't prove that I willfully left the lights on to drain the battery. If they don't then I know there are ways of self replacing so as not to pay upwards of 500$ to have the mothership do it. Could anyone help me out with best recommended steps and possible replacement options to get. I know that the systems needs to be cleared or something after the battery has been swapped. Any thoughts, Tips or guidance would be much appreciated.
2014 battery isn't going to be covered under warranty unless someone knows some Voodoo magic spell to cast on MINI.
You can buy a replacement battery, self install and either find an indy shop to register the battery or buy a scanner like the Foxwell or Shwaben that ECS sells and register it yourself. That isn't a cheap way to do it. Also Carly the app might do this, not sure about the Countryman. Some other software solutions work as well, don't remember which ones. If you change the battery type from OEM you probably have to do some coding as well. Such as going from AGM to non or in the reverse.
Some people don't believe in the registering process and just install a battery and ignore it. You should also check to see if you have the IBS sensor on your battery cable. Without that you might be able to get away with not registering.

Go aftermarket group 47 AGM, no point in going OEM BMW battery, get it registered to the car and it'll do exactly the same thing the factory one does. If you're going AGM to standard you have to code it as well, or vice versa.
Tons of people go without coding it, the theory is it'll just kill the battery quicker. I've always coded it so I have no clue what really happens.

Not sure about the coding, since I have not had to deal with that, but it’s not that hard to replace, you just have to remove the cowling beneath the windshield. Because it is enclosed, it is vented to the outside, so you need to get a battery that is compatible with that. Or do what I did, and find a place that is offering a special for free battery install with purchase and take full advantage of not doing it yourself! Ha ha.... then you just need to get it registered to the ECU. With that year, I’m almost positive that you have the IBS (intelligent battery system). Before I got mine registered, after it was replaced, the lights and gauges would not work properly, so I wouldn’t recommend ignoring this step. Like Minnie said above, you can pay a dealership or Indy shop to do this, I don’t know what they charge for it, or have someone with the right scan tool do it for you, or buy one for yourself. I used my Schwaben like Minnie states above. Works great, but unless you will be using it for other things as well, it’s a bit pricey at over $200. But well worth it if you are planning on turning your own wrenches on your Mini, since it has many functions.
Good luck. There’s no reason to pay full price at Mini for a battery. Most competent service writers will be able to look up the correct battery to fit your car. I was out the door with a new one installed for around $175 or so, you can find a decent deal if you shop around and ask people to price match.
