R56 R56 N14 Crankshaft Seal Tool
R56 N14 Crankshaft Seal Tool
Do you have to use the Mini specific crankshaft seal tool when replacing the crankshaft seal on a 2008 Mini Cooper S R56 N14 engine? Has anyone use any cheaper alternatives successfully? Thanks in advance.
No you don't. Main things to note are the seal should not be removed from the sleeve it comes on and should be slid into place dry. You can tap it in gently with a wooden dowel or some members have used a plastic plumbing fitting from DIY store which are the perfect fit. I have no idea what size they used, plenty threads to search for it.
There is a raised bit inside the aperture which stops the seal going in too far, you should measure the depth of your current one and insert to same depth is what Haynes recommend. Also clean the crank hub and aperture with solvent/petrol to remove old dirt and seal marks, again, do not oil anything before locating the seal. Dry fitting as per instructions that should be in the seal box.
