High-pitched engine noise and smoke from under the hood

I was in bumper to bumper traffic today when suddenly there was a high-pitched motor noise, sort of like what you hear when a public transportation bus starts to pull away from the curb. About a minute later I started smelling something like burning rubber and then there was white smoke coming out from under the hood. I pulled over and we looked underneath the car and only saw a little bit of water from the air conditioner dripping. Oil level seemed OK, and the coolant looks to be OK as well except it was at the very minimum amount allowed. I’m afraid to get back in the car because I actually thought the engine might catch fire. I bought some coolant just to see if adding a little bit will make a difference. It’s a 2009 mini Cooper with approximately 55,000 miles on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
