How many miles can I get out of 8mm left on brakes?

Had my 2015 JCW serviced yesterday at the dealer. It’s on its second set of brakes at 20,000 miles. They did a complementary brake inspection because my maintenance warranty expires tonite at midnight. They measure 8mm front, 9mm back. I know that’s good but can I go 10,000 more miles on that? I’m older drive more conservatively. I never jam on brakes. I need to make a decision today to renew my maintenance plan or I will lose it, but it may be a waste of money to spend for a 1 year renewal if the brakes last longer than a year. Can’t, afford a 2 year plan.
The lowest cost at a dealer ($1000 for one year, $1600 for 2 year) .They quoted $1400 for complete front brakes. I suppose I can get it lower at independent garage but want OEM parts.

Probably cheaper to have an independent MINI repair shop do your brakes. I notice now the dealer is just changing out pads and not rotors unless they are in a bad way. What is the cost of the maintenance extension?

The MINI applies the brakes during driving in various traction situations so that you don't even know the brakes are in use.

BTW - You've posted in 1st Generation section and your car is 3rd generation.

Brake usage varies from user to user. I followed a Detroit iron sedan down a main thoroughfare, thru traffic all the way, the other day and the brake light came on as they approached every intersection and on one they rode the brakes for a full block. How many miles 'till their's are shot?

8mm on a normal pad is usually only 50% used

Go to the parts department and ask to see a set of brake pads for your car, then measure.

8 mm is a lot of meat on your pads... as to how many miles, well that is an open question. Depends of a few factors, like how do you drive, do you track your car, highway or city driving...

...if you are a middle of the road driver, with average use and miles driven, I would guess 8 mm will get you 40-60K miles or so.

IF you drive more like me ... then maybe 15-20K miles. (I tend to track my cars).

Motor On!
