Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

So, the indicator light on the dash says that my tpms is inactive. When I purchased the car the sell told me that he switched wheels with his other Mini. So, i believe that I have no tpms sensor.

1) Do all wheels fit tpms sensors?
2) Is a 08 S use 433mhz sensors?
3) OEM or programable off of ebay? Important to me for cost.

I think that the oem would be the best, so there is not programing (I hope).
How are use ones? Can I find some on ebay?

Ok, thats enough for now

Thanks, Jeff

If the swap was with a comparable model year, and he had TPMS, chances are neither one of you has it functioning. If they were aftermarket wheels, he may have been too cheap to buy sensors --- can you ask him? For the price of a set of TPMs sensors, you'd be better off working with the seller to swap sensors, if he had them installed. My '07 MCS set cost about $100 each several years ago, and I learned there was a frequency change in late '07 or early '08. Maybe look them up in RealOEM.com using your VIN for a specific part number? Didn't TPMS become mandatory equipment for cars mfg'd in '07?

I have an 08 and I bought a set of 2012 16" mini rims for snows, but the tires on the still had a decent amount of tread so I threw them on to wear them out. The TPMS came on immediately, tried to reset them but it didn't work. Talked to my mechanic he said the sensors must matched up in the computer to recognize them, going to my summer tires as soon as they wear out so I'll wait until I put my snows to match them up.

As long as they are the same frequency and style they should work. I'v bought a couple OEM sets off Amazon for ~$50 each. Most wheel designs will work with TPMS. In several years I've only read of one instance that the wheel design caused a problem. There's someone in the classifieds selling a couple sets, but you'll have to check with them on year compatibility.

From DETAILS on the listing: Please note, as of the Sept 2009 build date MINI has a different frequency for the TPMS sensors. Please note the option on the drop down menu for build date and slight price change for the newer TPMS kit. Also, the Gen3 MINI ("F" series models) use a different kit as well. Please select accordingly.

So there are THREE different frequencies for MINI TPMS - I've never seen a 'programmable' sensor. If you look around a bit you'll find several threads of folks who saved money when buying their sensors only to have them not work on their MINI. Seller swears 'they should' ... not much help if they don't! This seller knows MINI ..... just sayin'

******************

p.s. historical details. 2002 MINI, into the 07 GEN2 model year had the monitoring system that did not use sensors, rather it worked off the BS system. US law required the 'active' or sensor based system implemented mid year of 2007. I had a 2007 S which was one of the last built for the US with the passive system (no sensors). The cars on the truck my car arrived on had a mix ..... later cars all came with the sensor based TPMS system..

Check the INPA threads in the electrical section. You can code out the TPMS sensors. Not the best solution as having the sensors can keep you out of trouble but a good short term solution.

I've bought used sensors and had no problems, and bought new as well. There is definitely a change in sensors between the cars. Swapping sensors may be difficult, plan on the nuts being seized, and having trouble getting them off of the wheels. For $25 or so you can buy new valve stems (they have them in black, if you want) on ebay.

I also had a receiver go bad on my 08, the dealer had to figure that out. After a while, I got the 'TPMS Inactive' warning and it would not reset.

Have fun,
Mike

Just replaced 4 TPMS on my 2011 Base 17" wheels. Battery life on sensor last 7-8 years all 4 sensors were marked on dash. Locate Eazytire they preprogram sensors for your car reasonable cost mine were 35.00 approx. free shipping. Have installed drove 2 miles and sensors cleared on dash.
