Defeat package shelf switch to lower top

Is there a way to defeat the package shelf switch and lower the top without the shelf in place? Does the shelf support the top when it is down? Why the lockout?

You can tie or tape something to physically press on the switch, and check for yourself whether the shelf supports the top. Pretty sure it does, though.

Shelf is required.

The rear window rests on the package shelf. Without the shelf the window would probably break.
