BOV or spring?

Ok what are people's opinions on upgrading to say altas bov or just replacing the spring in the stock bov in the r56?

I went DV+.. as it upgrades the important bits of the OEM design to make them bulletproof; that and Im 3rd owner and couldnt confirm if the stock diverter had ever been changed.

*install would be the same for the DV+ as installing just the spring from Alta..since you disassemble the stock unit.

I just installed the TurboSmart Plumb Back DV. It eliminates the electronic control with a bypass and runs on a boost tap at the map sensor. Its very strong as usually anything below 14 psi or so just kinda flutters. It sounds cool but also concerning. Above that though it will actuate well and gives the same audible noise as a stock DV. I only chose to do it as I was sick of the stock one purging so often, even when barely any boost was made. Also I'm retuning from stage 2 to stage 3 on a 42mm turbo so I want to added strength to stay closed at high boost.

I replaced the valve when I installed the spring, I figured the new rubber would be better than the original.

For <$100 at the dealership, I went with the revised DV that's technically for the JCW (at least according to my dealer). You should be able to use the alta spring with this as well.

From the post below, it seems that this new design superseded all r56 DV's, but they apparently still offer the old one with the diaphragm if you ask for a MCS DV.

Great to know. I understand that even if it is for JCW it will still work for MCS with N18?

I put this in about 3 weeks ago so I can confirm it works with the n18 r56. The 3 bolts were a pita to get out with the hex bits / allen keys that I had laying around. There's so much stuff in the way I had trouble getting the tool to fully seat with the bolt heads but they eventually came out.

Some of the aftermarket valves have different color springs based on how much boost or vac the car needs to operate it properly. Turbosmart has 4 or 5 different springs for your vehicles vacuum at idle. I actually spoke with a TS rep and he told me their BOV and DV come with a custom spring rated for our cars built by the engineers aftsr testing. He told me it was somewhere between a Blue and Green spring. Im thinking they shouldve used the blue spring. The Blue is the softest and is for cars that have -3 to -13 mmHg at idle. So the spring they used in our specific vehicle is a little stronget than that. it may work well for the N14 but the N18 only makes 1.5ish mmHg vacuum at idle. I'm either going to go back to the latest OEM DV or buy the $20 blue spring. There were reports from Veloster Turbo owners that swapped their vehicle specific spring for the Blue spring and had better operations of the turbosmart DV and 50/50 Bov.

Thanks for your reply now I understand. But I only am interested in replacing the spring since mine is tuned and already making more boost don't want to blow the turbo nor the motor, just on the moderate side for not loose boost during shifting.
I think the spring from Alta would do the job for tune.

Theres a lot of people who run the latest OEM DV on 23-24psi with no issue. Running the Alta spring is just good insurance I guess.

So based on the info given by Trigger2011 the Alta spring is not a good fit in this new DV, but seems like the new DV may have a stronger spring than the old one that came with the car. Although I ordered the spring from esc yesterday I may just order the new one and replace my old one as well.

Confirmed. I run the stock DV on 23lbs of boost with no issues (Manic stage 2)

yeah this one: new version DV for MCS/JCW

I picked it up off of Tigger's recommendation and like that it doesn't have the weak rubber diaphragm. 16K miles on it, and so far, so good

Results, my order came in from ESC on Friday and could not wait to install the new BOV.
But horny doooooos did not let me. Today the wife was out of town with few of her friends and I got the mini in the garage, first I have to say what a PITA it was to get to the part with all the tools that I own it was still a pain, well long story short lost one of the screws and had to go to home depot and get another 16x6 metric and finish the job.i really did not know what to expect after install I also installed the Alta spring. all I can say my car is now the true meaning of night and day, although I am on stage 2 manic I always thought there should be more to this car then I feel , now I know what stage 2 manic should be holding boost and ripping the tires off..

I've seen a couple of notes that the Alta spring doesn't work well with automatics. I'm running a basically stock 2013 MCS (Manic Stage 1, boost tubes, FMIC). My last car was a manual trans, and I noticed a difference with the Alta spring.

This car is an auto, am I better off sticking with the stock spring, or go with the alta? I figure if I'm gonna go with the new OEM valve, and not sure what spring to go to.

You don't need any new springs on the latest OEM DV. Its fine. I run 22+ psi on it with no issue. My 2014 Clubman S is also Automatic.
