Paddle shifters retrofit

One think I wad missing from my « off the lot » Countryman was paddles and sport transmission. It was on my to do list from purchase date!

A few weeks ago, I got a JCW steering wheel from eBay. Including shipping, it cost $475cad which is in the same price range ad getting just paddles and fit them to my existing steering wheel, set aside all retrofit work that would have been required! Plus, the JCW wheel is much nicer and feels more sportier!

The wheel I got from eBay had different cruise controls layout than my stock ones... No worries as it still works, but with new buttons layout!

I had the steering wheel installed at my local dealer and asked them to code paddles and sport transmission as well. They were able to install the steering but said it was impossible to code it (my car was missing a wire and a module according to their tech...)

I bought a cable to code from a guy on eBay, and he offers remote coding. Upon checking my VIN, he said it could be done without any issues.

I had it coded 2 days ago and everything is just as expected! He coded the paddles, 2TB sport transmission (which alone is an amazing upgrade from the paddle-less version!) and also coded launch control. On that last option, he was able ton activate it but I didn’t try it yet...

This is the eBay link to the cable and remote programmer...

I've found that the dealership is the last place to have any knowledge of coding. I asked a question about it and the service guy had no clue what I was talking about.

Obviously you found that out as well. Good luck with your new install!

I want to do this to my CM so badly, but the dealer said that it couldn't be done. I'm so glad you posted this. Do you happen to know the part number of the steering wheel that you purchased?

I'm ready to pull the trigger now but just want to be sure.

Thanks

Do a search on eBay for « F56 paddles »...

You’ll find plenty! I got one from Poland with different cruise control layout and it works like the stock one...

If I buy supported ODB2 adapter and use bimmercode app, will it let me code just the AT to sport AT? OR I have to purchase some cable and adapter to do it? My car doesn't have paddle shifters as it comes with regular steering wheel.

Thanks for posting this.
What year is your Countryman?

I have a 2018 S All4 and would love to do this upgrade.
(once I am done with the warranty)

Thanks

Mine is a 2017 Cooper S All4.

Swapping the steering wheel is pretty straight forward.

Coding the paddles in the ECU was done remotely by someone on eBay who sold me the required cable. (see first post)

Very glad I did the swap.

At the same time, the programmer also coded launch control
