Drivetrain Meth Kit or Bigger Turbo
Meth Kit or Bigger Turbo
As we all know tax season is upon us. I will already be purchasing a new set of tires for this seasons track duties. Right now I'm looking at the Riken Raptor ZR's, Firehawk Indy 500, and Yokohama Advan Neova AD08. Basically I'm chasing 12's for the 1/4 mile and I will also do some road course racing.
My dilemma right now is #1 Budget and #2 hit my goals.
Right now I have a personal best of 13.5 @103 for the 1/4 mile and this is with a 2.090 60' I spin A LOT in 1st and into 2nd. Right now I have Michelin Defenders which are 840UTQG rated designed to last upwards of 80k miles....so theyre basically rocks. If the tires I'm choosing between can get me a 1.8 60' I should be able to achieve a 13.0 if not a 12.9 ET.
My current Mods are: Manic Stage 2, Ebay Forge Intercooler, 2 step colder plugs, Catless downpipe, CTS turbo intake, and a custom exhaust. This is all on a 2014 Clubman S (so N18) and its AUTO.
SO! to my real question....The only real things I have left to do power wise is Water/meth and a larger Turbo. I was looking at JMTC for the 42mm or the JCW 40mm they sell. Obviously one of these mods is cheaper than the other. Also one of these mods makes massively more power than the other. One will keep the engine nice and cool and raise octane, while the other may raise temps and obviously stress on the motor.
I may be answering my own question already but I wanted to get opinions from people who have gone this route. Should I get the METH KIT....or the TURBO...mind you Eventually...I will have both (it may take a while) but which to start with.
Also just for FUN here's a screen shot of my latest pull done on the Torque Pro app with Carista Blue Tooth OBD reader... its a new best for me. Previously my highest estimated WHP and TQ was 230/246 but today I got 246WHP and 238TQ!!! Definitely want to get on a dyno and see whats really up.

While it's not fact, I'm of the opinion that methanol injection is a pre-requisite to a bigger turbo on these cars. I have meth on Manic Stage 2 and it gives me a lot of peace of mind when I'm getting on it in even slightly warmer temps.
Any noticeable gains from the meth on stage 2?
Eh not really. I switched from Map B to Map C and noticed a little more in the mid range but you're really pushing the limits of the stock turbo at that point.
Methanol is by far the best addition to a highly modified motor. But the only way to obtain the highest benefits, is to Tune for Meth Inj. The lower temps, advanced timing and cleaner valves are all benefits when it come to our MINIs. Ran Meth on Stage II + w/stock Turbo for the past two years and loved it. Now running Stage III Bespoked on a JMTC 42MM and Love it even more. Calling it a MINI is an Oxymoron,.. I'll Rename it (Goliath): thumbsup:

If there's gonna be a time lapse between the turbo and WMI, go for the WMI 1st --- for all the benefits already mentioned, and not have to run your new turbo without the cooling benefits of WMI for some unspecified time. Why stress a new turbo?
My HFS-4 is about 5 years old. Trouble-free and well worth the difference in price.

HFS is Top of the Line... I have their Tank, suited up with some parts from Devils Own and so on. You can build your own kit and save money. I think of it like this; Set it up so that you run Map C; Tuned by Manic for Meth; I have it set up to turn on at 9psi and push to max at 19psi... Map C gets to about 22psi with Meth. No issues on Stage II +; about to test tomorrow on Stage III
I would do the larger turbo and of course use a higher octane at the track. A turbo will help your 1/4 mile Times way more than meth. I would suggest doing meth eventually to give you insurance and peace of mind. I sell a good amount of 42’s and my own 43mm design
My recommendation would be a meth kit first as its much less expensive than a new engine. Until retuned use a .6mm or ~250cc nozzle. You'll notice a small performance difference from a more dense intake charge and less pulled timing at high load. Then when you install the turbo, upgrade the ECU calibration to take advantage of both.
Several of my clients have installed the Snow Performance Stage 2 Boost Cooler and had no complaints. The 52mm controller also doubles as a boost gauge. Just be aware that adding a failsafe will run you another $200.
