I'd like to add an amp and small sub to the factory system. I want to avoid having to use one of those crappy speaker-level to line level adapters and need to know if there are RCA jacks or any other way to hook another amp up to the factory CD.

Sorry, but no. There are no preouts on the stock stereo. Your only option is a high-to-low-level converter, or replace it all.

Dead-gummit! The last time I used one of those converters the factory amp blew after about a year! Like you said, guess I'll just have to replace it all. Thanks for the bad news.

I don't know if you have the amp already, but if you buy an amp with speaker level inputs, then you won't need an adapter, or a new head unit.

Didn't the factory radios change last year? I'm wanting to know the same thing... are there preouts on my factory non-HK stereo?

OEM head unit only has speaker-level output and no preouts. A simple solution is to get an amp with speaker-level input. Bad idea!

For my sub amp, I purchased the Blaupunkt PA2150 (~$98 on ebay) - it came with a line level converter, but it didn't work with the MINI's head unit for some reason. After asking around a bit on some car audio forums, I chose to buy a converter from David Navone Engineering www.davidnavone.com. The one I am using is the N-7V, which is a 2-channel converter with adjustable gain. It works really well for my setup. You should check out his site, he has lots of different converters and adapters along with some test CDs and other stuff.

I mounted the N-7V in the passenger boot cubby with some Velcro discs - it's easy to get to to adjust if necessary, and is out of the way.

I mounted mine behind the radio...Was a pain in the **** to install there, and probably not the smartest idea, but it works wonderfully. The gain adjustment is easy to get at, i just have to remove the kick panel and the unit slides into view at the top right!

Took about 1 hour install time, from start-->finish. Then another 30 minutes to run my wires. Nice to have the battery in the back too! Wokred wonderfully for powering the amp.

Will.
