First post here. Looking for some help. I have a 2009 Clubman JCW. I have a persistent clicking noise coming from what sounds like the left front wheel. Only happens while accelerating. Assuming it was the CV joints, the left front axle assembly was replaced, but to my dismay the clicking continues. At first it was only doing it from a stop in first gear. Now it does it up through 4th. Kinda at my wits' end with this. Could it be a bearing assembly? I've never heard one 'click' like this. Thanks in advance!

 

If the sound is speed dependent, it could be bearings. Worn bearings can cause all sorts of different noises. It could also be brake rotor to pad contact? CV joint is typically only heard when turning, but since you've replaced it, I would rule it out.

 

Brakes are brand new also at all 4 corners. I've read now that the bearings can click, but I have never personally experienced that. It's always been the low rumbling noise. I'll check the bearing. Thanks!

 

I was going to suggest wheel bearing. Just dealt with a clicking sound in a BMW 135i and that is what I replaced to correct it.

ovalboy, did you design the roof rack?

 

Mikeyb74 - I have the new wheel bearing already, just looking for a break in the clouds to get it installed. Hopefully that's the fix, but in the meantime the knock sensor has been acting up too....always something.

And yes, I designed and built the roofrack myself. I'm a vintage VW guy too, and I built it to replicate the Bekowa roof racks offered through VW dealers back in the 50's and 60's.

I would have to do something alittle different on my clubman because it's a slick top. I have the genuine mini roof rack that has never been installed.

 

Back to square one. Wasn't the axle, wasn't the bearing. Checked passenger side, no boots torn and the bearing seems to be tight. Only clicks when accelerating, makes no difference if it's turning or straight line. With the passenger side up in stands, I rocked the RF wheel back and forth and a *similar* noise came from the input where the axle goes into the transaxle. No clutch slippage, plenty of pedal. Tired of throwing money at this thing.

Also having a separate issue with what I call a terrible miss during acceleration coupled with it jumping in and out of limp mode. Was originally throwing a code for the knock sensor so I replaced that. Now I'm having the same issue just without the CEL, only limp mode. Not sure that it's the HPFP because I'm not having any cold start issues. Fires right up and idles ok, but with an obvious miss in it.

I'm just looking for a foothold to get started here....

 

for the clicking: did you check the transmission mount. look at the bolt and see how high it is and if there are any bolt movement marks.

cold start issue: you probably know about the timing chain issue, so, was that replaced at some point in time?

for the limp mode: although it isnt a check engine light, get an obd reading, that will help.

 

Transmission mount - no, I'm unaware of that. I'll take a look.

Cold Start - Never really had a 'cold start' issue, just the limp mode and cutting out under acceleration.

I did pull the plugs out of it last night and they are toast. Picked up a new set today. I'll work my way through all of the less expensive stuff (plugs, coil packs, fuel filter...) before attempting to replace the HPFP.

Timing chain and tensioner were replaced at 163K. It now has 192K on it. So it's still pretty new.

 

I've known slotted rotors to create a clicking noise even when the brake pedal is not being pressed. Do you have slotted or drilled rotors?

 

Nope. Just standard vented. It's definitely something in the driveline. Clutch isn't slipping, pulls fine, just clatters like mad. Only when accelerating, straight or turning makes no difference. Driver side axle and bearing have been replaced. Pass side bearing seems to be ok. I did read today of someone who's pass side axle had worn splines at the transaxle.

Im completely at a loss with this thing. Driveline issues and fuel/ignition issues...I've about had my fill
