Engine Oil - Start Measurement Disabled

I have a 2016 F55S. When I first got the car, I was able to check the engine oil level using the menu option. I can't remember if I've been able to check it since I had a software update, however now the start measurement is always disabled (grayed out). I'm on a level surface, in park and not touching the accelerator... Has this been disabled in a software update? Or any other ideas?

Thanks!

Do you have the engine at operating temperature? I think it recommends driving 20-30 minutes before checking.

I agree...check it when the engine is hot. Good luck to you!

This discussion wouldn't be necessary if there was a DIPSTICK! I vote we petition MINI for "the return of the dipstick" to our beloved MINI's. They "can" do it you know!

So what! Does that mean you give up or don't care? In the 90's if the BMW CCA hadn't petitioned BMW to import the E36 M3 it would never have happened!

BMW listens to their customers & enthusiasts. All it takes is "effort" and "organization"!

You could still have electronic measuring if you like, but it should be rather simple to add a dipstick for those owners who prefer one. Might help out when the electronics are on the blink too!

Good luck getting them to listen to you on this one.

You are asking the wrong person, as I've driven several generation MINI's over the years but my 2015 JCW is my first MINI. I'm certain the classic Mini's had dipsticks, regardless....just dumb not having one, unless you are totally inept at doing anything maintenance-wise to your own car. I'm not alone on this viewpoint I can assure you.

The reason I ask is because the dipstick on my 2008 MCS sucked.

Yup. First thing I bought for my '07 was a Cravenspeed dipstick.

Well, this isn't a good sign for MINI then is it? But, those engines weren't made by BMW either, so maybe that's the reason. I just think eliminating the dipstick was done for reasons other than poor dipstick design.

That was apparently the issue... Hadn't driven it long enough. Even though the engine temperature was in the middle, according to the temp monitor. Drove it to pick up my son this morning (first time I've had a chance to drive for over 20 minutes) and it worked!

Thanks!

Glad to hear that it worked!

Yes indeed, but wouldn't it be nice to be able to check the oil level "before" even starting the engine? Sorry, I couldn't help myself. ;-)

Better yet a sensor that measured volume and worked in real time as you drove. Going to invent that in my next life.
