custom hacked together exhaust

My exhaust finally gave up the ghost the week before we have to do the Nutcracker ballet removal in Boston so i needed an exhaust and fast so i picked up 78 bucks worth of cherry bomb muffler and some pipes and clamps and have a car that is now louder than it should ever be but will get me up and back for the next four days. I will try and get a video clip up tomorrow or the next day.

I had an Invidia exhaust on mine for a while. It was only slightly louder but instead of a pleasant burble that comes out of my BMW straight 6, the 4 cylinder only buzzes. I enjoyed it around town but after a 15 hour drive on the expressway, I couldn't take it anymore and took it off and went back to the stock pipes. I kind of wish now I hadn't sold it because I don't do those drives that often and around town it was nice.

The fact he hacked it together made me interested. Will it sound ricey or have a throaty growl? Tis the question.

WOW...

That's not that loud.....

I bought a 2006 MCB ( chili RED ) with 86,000 Drove over two hours to get it. and it had the loudest muffler....like a cherry bomb...glass pack...etc..

Passed inspection.....after a few weeks ..my beautiful lovely wife said......here.....she hands me her CC......go get a new muffler.

Got it replaced.......very expensive...got it on-line for 300.00 and 80.00 to install.

Dealer wanted $700.00 !!!!!

MUCH better...

I wished I would have kept the old one though.....I'm sure someone on here could have used it

I think the video doesnt fully capture how loud it is I think I need my fillings redone and a tylenol after the hour commute each way this week . You can see the heat shield damage from when the exhaust fell onto it. The aluminum shield was all that was holding the exhaust up , luckily I limped it home. Still not sure if I will keep it this way or cobble something together with my bender. So far its cost me around 78-79 bucks

Here is some closer shots of what I did I cut the pipe heading to the pass side used a 2 1/4 45 degree pre bent to get it to the muffler and used a 21/4 to 21/2 adapter to fit the muffler since no one had a 21/4 to 21/2 45 pipe to use available locally and I needed this up and running this week and fast

as a "temporary" fix, you hacked up your rear valance, and a couple posts up you typed "Still not sure if I will keep it this way or cobble something together with my bender."

Looks bad, sounds bad, probably leaking exhaust under the car... You posted your "fix" on a public forum.. I think the british term for what's been done here is a "bodge"

You assume an awful lot don't you ? It says hacked doesn't it am I saying this is awesome ?no u I needed it and got it done and it worked it has not one leak underneath and is tight to the car not banging around I give zero crap about the rear valance at the moment it was in the way, I need a car to go from a to B this week and it did I have a bender a welder a lathe and no time to use them presently I think the American term for what you did is "assume" you can go back to buying parts and having someone put them on for you ....see what assuming does? If you have seen the video in my signature of my last project I kinda got some skills but it's cool I get attitude just for owning a mini from the guys at work I'm used to it.

You can have all the opinion if you want to call the exhaust crap how it sounds or looks that's fine your assumption of what I can do or the tools I have is what makes me laugh you can carry-on , this is a public forum about R53 and I don't see a lot of people post about situations with exhausts like this I thought people would be interested , this is north American motoring not trash or be trashed on the yellow bullet maybe you should take a look at that site they love memes and attitudes .

Thanks it worked for the week I may leave it for now because it sits until April I drive my truck in the winter . With the ballet removal I wasn't using my truck it would've cost 50 bucks a day in fuel alone . Otherwise I wouldn't have done this at all , answered a few questions I had about these cars and mufflers for sure . I like the Borla and may jump on it this spring love the sound .

Its your car and in a pinch it is not a bad idea. There is a post here where one guy used some cheap chain as straps to hold his muffler up.

I am still looking for a Christmas type elf that can get into the tight spots without having to put the car in Front Service Mode.

But it would be too easy if we didn't have to go through the ENTIRE Front Service Mode on almost every motor maintenance issue... It's such a joy.

And by [sarcasm]joy[/sarcasm], I do mean HUGE PITA.

Hey MiniMello, why weren't you able to run the exhaust through the original exhaust outlet?

I couldn't the only muffler on the shelf that day was the one I got it was small enough to fit all the rest were the honda kid types the potatoe shooters I didn't want a rice pipe , when I mounted everything it was 1 inch from the back side of the bumper backing no room to bend a pipe to the middle so I had to make do with what was there and notched the bumper . Down the road I'll pick up another valance but I needed it the next day and it was cut it or not drive it
