Another r53 turbo question. (Seriously though)

While I have my car appart, I'm weighing the cost of my supercharger I really want from way, and using turbo stuff I have in my shed.

First things first I do not want to make a 500hp animal. I want to keep my daily drive ability and have that type of power curve a turbo gives.

I already have an aux oil pump, a turbo, and oval pipe in various lengths. Plus my battery box has already been deleted so I have room to play.

I'm unsure of the turbo size I should be using but I have a very good condition k04 (too small?)

I also wanted some insight on how to eliminate the supercharger ENTIRELY. I understand I'll need a electric waterpump no biggie, but how do I get rid of the bypass tube or does that come off with the SC?

Also for tuning would I be better off with a WMW tuner and their knowledge, or bytronic and a known local tuner?

Many more questions but just need to know someone's out there with knowlege!

Even with fabrication and cost out of the equation, tuning is a major hurdle without going to a stand alone ECU.
The real issue isn't HP either, it's everyday driving and how the ECU interprets boost and it's correlation to RPM.
While not impossible to tune on the factory ECU, it's difficult enough that most people throw in the towel and either go stand alone or scrap the project entirely.

Just out of curiosity, what do you mean the battery box has been deleted? The r53 has the battery in the boot from the factory.

I was about to say the same thing.

Why not just get an R56? That's a lot of money and time to do such a conversion.

The box that your mufflers have to bend around under the trunk is gone. The battery is IN the trunk in a strapped down box. And if I had the money to buy another car I would. At this point all I'm spending money on is a tuner and little odds and ends, i have most of what I want to use.

So, are you converting this Super Charged Mini to a Turbo Charged car?

I already have an aux oil pump, a turbo, and oval pipe in various lengths. Plus my battery box has already been deleted so I have room to play.

I'm unsure of the turbo size I should be using but I have a very good condition k04 (too small?)

To entirely eliminate the super charges is a huge undertaking, you would also have to deal with the ECU as well.

Also for tuning would I be better off with a WMW tuner and their knowledge, or bytronic and a known local tuner?

I don't know WMW very well, but I'm sure any tuner would advise you that this undertaking from a factory super charged car to a turbo conversion would not be fruitful.

Many more questions but just need to know someone's out there with knowledge!
Thanks for posting your questions on this forum about this topic (SC to Turbo conversion) and we're glad to help you. But this is a very highly doubtful conversion as well as expensive if it could be accomplished. If I were you, I'd just save some money and get a turbo car. Cheers and good luck.

I don't think it would be any harder than putting a turbo on any other non turbo car, at least you know the block can take boost. It's just not going to be very cost effective with dealing with tuning for it to run properly, versus modifying the car to run faster with a supercharger.

K04 would be more than enough turbo to use. Look at the gains guys are getting on the 2.0T swapping over to the K04.

My old CC I was going to swap out for the K04 and it would of been like 85 + HP gain.

If you know what you are doing then go for it. What's wrong with your blower on the car now ?

Yeah, you're right, the ad was edited. When he first posted it, there was only one exterior photo and it said "turbo conversion". I just called him on it and he said he, "possibly worded it wrong".

Mechanically it's no different than bolting a turbo to any other car. The tuning it what really screws you. Compared to Ford or Chevy LS motors that have hundreds of guys around the country that can professionally (and easily) tune them, and also all kinds of software available for individuals to tune their own motors.......when it comes to finding someone that knows how to tune a MINI, there are only a handful (if that) of guys around the country that can do it right....and only one or two software packages out there that let you attempt to do the tuning on your own.....none of which really sound all that easy to understand and use, or stable/reliable.

That's the one thing that really puts a hurt on the minis.....is tuning. The Mini "community" is so small, there really isn't much money in it, so most tuners and software companies don't want to invest the time and money into figuring out the Mini/BMW code....and how it works with the DME.

If there was a software out there like HP Tuners, but for MINI's....I think you would see a lot more big HP minis out there running aftermarket turbos and supercharges........
