R50/53 Valeo Clutch: Chatter when downshifting?
Valeo Clutch: Chatter when downshifting?
I've got a few hundred miles on my new Valeo clutch. It's great....grabs hard, smooth takeoffs from a stop, light clutch pedal.
The only thing I've noticed is that if I'm down shifting and I don't rev-match (blip the gas a little to raise the rmps), it will chatter and vibrate a little when I let the clutch out. I really notice it if I'm slowing down and the engine is idling and the car is still rolling and I let out on the clutch to slow the car down...then you can really feel it.
Other than that it's perfect. Anyone have that issue with their Valeo clutch? Do I just need to drive it and break it in some more?

I've had mine in for about 250mi now...trying to keep my foot off the throttle until I get to 500mi. I notice the same chatter at low speed going down to 2nd only. If I take a corner at a decent speed...going to 2nd is not that noticeable. I think that lack of the DMF you are now feeling more of the natural/present chatter? I would get a bit of chatter trying to crawl in a drive-through line and it is hard to keep from rolling back while trying to slip the clutch a little (if you know what I mean?) without chattering. I'm thinking once I feel the clutch has sufficiently broken in (500mi +), giving it a little more gas would mitigate some of the chatter. Even with this said...I love the Valeo kit, it is so much lighter than the stock one which my tech said probably has about 5K mi left on it. The couple times my foot slipped on the throttle, the car feels like it wants to take off
Well, it's been about a month and I've put around 600 miles on the new clutch. All of a sudden....no more chatter on the downshifts
So the recommended break in time is around 500 miles? Chatter is to be expected until then?
Also, how's the flywheel vs. the stock DMF?
Just wondering, can't wait to get mine on and the little MINI back on the road. You really don't realize how much fun they are when you have to drive a truck (F-150) vs your R53.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I drive my Ram 1500 when my mini is down for service or when there is snow on the ground.....definitely not as fun.
As far as the clutch, yes....I'm pretty sure you need to take it pretty easy on it for at least 500 miles to let the clutch get broke in really well. The only real difference I notice between the OEM clutch and the Valeo is the lighter pedal feel. The first time I pressed in the pedal with the new clutch it felt like something was wrong.....that's how light it was (or maybe that just shows how heavy the OEM clutch was). After driving it 600 miles or so and getting used to it, now it feels great.
It engages nice and smooth, has plenty of holding power, and does what it should....no complaints.

My factory clutch was still in good shape for 15 yrs except flywheel.
I hope my valeo conversion kit noise goes away...

I'm assuming that shop that did it for you isn't helping you out? If it was me, I would make them put something in writing saying that the noise/chatter/vibraton you are having is normal........just so you can keep a record of it. Do they warranty their repairs? If so.....I would be documenting everything I could. It sounds like they didn't' install it right......
I'm not sure why your clutch is making noise when you are hard on the gas.....that doesn't make any sense at all. When your foot is off of the pedal, and the clutch is fully engaged.....nothing should be moving, or chattering.

I took it back to the shop last Saturday because of rear rotors makes grinding noise and it was because the aftermarket rotor was bent so they replaced with used oem rotors for free and asked the guy who replaced clutch kit again and he said that they installed properly and it’s all because of the part like the defective brake rotors. He said after few more hundred miles, bring it back
I don't understand. The bad brake rotor is what's causing your chattering issue with your new clutch? If there is a bent/bad part......why wouldn't driving it another hundred miles do....??
Are you saying that the flywheel is bent??
No no no. I’m saying they replaced rotors and i asked them if the clutch makes noise even after 500-700miles then he told me to bring it back to the shop.
They let me drive 500-700 because they said the clutch needs to break in. I don’t know...
