Would you buy a '06 with a p2096 code?

So it seems like we finally found a good replacement for our mini that was totalled last July now that we're on the east coast but it has a p2096 code. The guy said he's replaced the o2 sensor and just hasn't had the chance to get the code cleared.

It has about 80k miles on it. What are your thoughts?

What state are you in?
Kinda makes a difference....some let you pass with one item not ready, etc...
I would consider the fact that the o2 sensor might not be the cause...
Often a bad gasket on an exhaust, or cracked header pipe, etc is why there is a code....work it into the price...

I'm in PA. I'll try and talk him down a bit since that seems like a pain to problem solve.

Maybe. But a code reader from AutoZone is only around $60, which will also clear codes, and you'd think a seller would do so before making promises on finished repairs. Also, it's good tool to have around.

A cheap code reader WILL NOT CLEAR a hard emissions code....
That's the hard part...it needs a pro level tool...or this..

Even program new keys if you have the patience to learn how.

The 2096 can be a hard one to track down...so price it in.

I've had a P2096 since installing exhaust. I'm sure it's a leak somewhere but haven't had a chance to really track down. I'm really use to driving it with that light on.
If it works for you, I'd talk him down. You may still fall under an O2 warranty and the dealer may take care of it.

The car has an Alta exhaust installed so I don't think the warranty would replace it.

A 2096 typically is caused by a leak BEFORE THE CAT....it forms a tiny venturi (the lack of a seal, in the form of a failed gasket, cracked pipe, or bad flex joint), and can suck unburnt air in...the o2 sensor then can see unburnt oxygen, and reports a lean condition.
Sure...sometimes a cheap aftermarket o2 sensor can cause it...but it's a different issue in most cases.
