When I go to RealOEM and submit my VIN number it comes back with these pad part numbers:
34116778320
34116770332
34112167235
The last one is clearly for JCW but the other 2 are a bit ambiguous.
When I go to Pelican Parts with my VIN it shows a bunch of aftermarket ones with a note signifying they are for JCW cars. However, when I called Pelican Parts the guy I talked to was really helpful but he said only that last one will fit, none of the aftermarket pads are listed as fitting.
I can see in the photos and drawings that there are physical differences between the pads. One has straight square-ish tabs out to the side and the others look like hooks. The problem is they are both shown in different sources as JCW brakes. I'm sure they must be stock photos.
So before I take apart my brakes to see what the pads look like first I thought I'd come here to see if anyone has a definitive answer on aftermarket brakes. I would hate to order brake pads and them not fit, especially since Pelican has a no return policy on brakes.
You just need the parts that say for JCW brakes, if you have them , they were on option on the gen 1 JCW cars . 34116778320 front ( or any aftermarket that states on our site " For John Cooper Works kit" ) ,
takes a special same size pad for the back as the S and the Cooper, but MINI on the JCW factory Gen 1 brakes made a different part # 34216770252 " John Cooper Works kit" for the back, it just has a different friction matrial. You can use 34216762871 ( or aftermarket) on the back also.
Do you have a pic of your front brakes, do you have a sticker in the door jamb that states, JCW sport brakes installed. The Vin does not show everything.
Thanks for the reply. I should have had another cup of coffee before taking apart the car, I would have seen your post before getting dirty.
Yes, I have the red calipers with the JCW on it. I am the original owner and ordered it with the full JCW package except for the suspension. Thanks for checking this!
I took apart the brakes and found they have the squared tab, not the hook-shaped tabs on the sides of the pads.
Thanks for the link, I'll definitely take a look around your site.
A big problem is that I live in Hawaii so most shipping rates are cost prohibitive. That usually leaves us with limited options. :(
My '05 MCS had the later front brakes (Gen2) put on it, which I am told are the same as the Gen1 JCW brakes. For front pads, I'd need those marked 'for JCW kit only' is that correct?
Or can I get a full set of pads for the Gen2 MCS which had the same brakes front and rear as I have now?
You can tell if the car has the bbk with the rims on the car...calipers on the JCW with the big brake kit are different than the standard s brakes....
Being a 2006, it SHOULD have the JCW bbk...it was free with the JCW kit IF it was factory installed...
But a word of warning....the bbk was an OPTION on nonfactoctory JCW cars, but a VERY POPULAR UPGRADE...
Many folks installed gen2 S brakes, since it is the same caliper (just add red paint and a sticker) as then gen1 JCW ones....
So if you have a gen1 car, I STRONGLY suggest you look at pictures of both.... And compare the calipers to have it car before ordering brake parts!!
And many s cars have red brakes, and JCW unpainted, so ignore the colors.

I would order any r53 rears of your choice, and the front pads would be either that you mentioned....
But one thought....
I would get the JCW OEM pads (if different part number) as opposed to the stock gen2 pads....simple cause the pas formulation might be different, but EITHER one is likly very dusty...
So IMO just order high performance pads of the choice for a gen1 JCW bbk car...ebc reds are liked by many...it partly depends on your driving style....and tolerance of dust
If the pads and rotors were swapped anything is possible...it the swap was done right, from a gen2 S, everything should be fine.
I would suggest you get gen1 JCW pads as opposed to gen2 pads....the gen2 cars tend to be heavier, so the pads from some more tend to be a bit harder if they are different..proper pad choice depends on the physical pad fitting, the drivers style, AND the weight and HP of the car...heavier higher up cars tend to get a harder, pad that works better warmer...and it might not ever get to optimum temp....mostly theoretically speaking here, since many sell the gen2 pads as gen1 JCW since they fit, and weights and HP are KINDA similar....not all, but makers want the largest market for a given part # to push more volume.
Thanks Zippy,
The original owner did an excellent job of getting everything done to the highest level, so JCW brake pads should be right on. I understand the weight/HP/driving style, I used to race a GP Spitfire with Hawk Blue pads that were too aggressive for the weight of the car, we found we were going through rotors faster than pads- at a 2:1 rate! On the upside, the rotors were 1/2 the price of the pads!
