Radio stopped working suddenly

We have a 2009 R56 Cooper and the radio stopped working overnight dead defunct - no display no sound at all.
Checked the fuses under the bonnet and in the kick panel - all good.
I understand there is one behind the radio but other posts suggest this is not the issue, I called mini - no help except for a $1000 for a new one.
Does anyone know what the problem is and can they be repaired.
Thanks.

I've been going through this with our 2009 Justa for over a year now. The radio and the attendant display stuff below the center speed is just black. No time, no date even.

It will go along like this for several weeks, and then start running again as if nothing had ever been wrong -- even the clock and date are right and the presets are still intact. It will work again for a few weeks, then nothing again. That cycle repeats. I've had everything out of the dash and checked all of the contacts to be sure that nothing is losing connectivity.

I've left several postings here but to no avail. It is frustrating.

Ours is just dead - does not come back to life at all.

Anyone out there have a fix or know what to repair would be really usefull, I will not pay $1000 for a radio to bust again.

Seems to be a somewhat common problem. From the threads I've seen individuals stated it was either a dead head unit or a bad ribbon cable to the HU. Posted some threads below for you.

Radio and navigation systems not working

This seems to be a pretty common problem with minis. Also, a really expensive fix!! Why isn't there a recall? I just bought a 2009 Clubman from car max.. 31 days after purchase the systems went dead! One day after warranty expired! Not cool and no real info on how to fix the problem!

I found a used one on Ebay for $200, make sure the part #s match though, I too would not pay $1000, they should be recalled.

Usually as soon as we get some used R56 radios in, they will sell quickly. It does seem to be a common issue for the 2nd gen.

The cheapest fix is definitely grabbing a used one if they are available.

Do I have to replace the whole unit (Speedo & CD) or just the CD? I see them both listed on ebay. My 09 radio just died and it shows no sign of life at all.
