R56 Retrofit BMW homelink (from E39, E46, E53)
Retrofit BMW homelink (from E39, E46, E53)
I've read a few retrofits using GM homelinks. Got this idea to retrofit a BMW homelink so its sort of OEM.
This is what I started with

Here is the homelink

Cutting up the trim piece

Ended up with this:

Now my problem is the wiring. Followed crucial fiction's thread re the purple wire (here). And I do get +12V out of it. I even used the brown wire from the same connector but the homelink doesnt work. I even grounded the unit to the sunvisor bolt. and while I get 12V out of my tester the unit doesnt respond. I went ahead and swapped and reprogrammed the new part with my E39 and it works as it should. But with the wiring identified on the mini it doesnt work
Here is the left side connector showing the purple and brown wires

I've been at this for a few hours now. Would appreciate any input. What Am I doing wrong???

::To the mods - I apologize for the double post. There hasnt been movement in the electrical section for a few days and I am really desperate

Welcome. Yes, two ways, that mod or the factory set up linked.

I received mine in the mail. Do you know the programming instructions?
UPDATE:
I found the programming instructions, but cannot for the life of me get it to work with my garage door opener. I have an obsolete Wayne Dalton Quantum 3316. I'm going to try it on my neighbors door to confirm that the homelink unit actually works, everything lights up it just won't accept my frequency from my current remote unit.
I've ordered a universal unit off eBay and I going to try that. It is kind of a bummer because the BMW unit lights up in perfectly matching orange color.

The wiring on the homelink unit is as follows:
Brown is ground
Orange is 12 v for illumination for the 3 buttons.
Green is 12v for homelink control unit
So in the overhead console of the MINI, connect the green to switched accessory power or if you want the homelink to always work then to 12V constant power (think of the security implications of this)
Connect the orange to 12V switched power from headlights being turned on or to any switched power if you want the buttons to be illuminated all the time when the car is on.
Connect brown to ground.

I have a few spare rolling code BMW e53 Homelink UGDO devices, just like the original poster has, and wante dto install one, so I appreciate you confirming the wiring to use in the Overhead console area.
