I carefully followed instructions replaced my thermostat housing with no issues. I got the CEL on start up and the cooling fan runs as soon as I turn the car on and will run constant . All my connectors are plugged in my thought is maybe I have two of them in the wrong place ? But it seems pretty straightforward . Any thoughts or advice much appreciated I have taken this thing apart many times I even put the old one back on which did not change anything I cannot do this job in under 30 minutes . But I really need to be able to drive it and am becoming increasingly frustrated.
DMB MINI, I recently did this job too. You didn't say what year, model, etc.
But...the P173B code according to the Bentley Manual states "CAN Engine Coolant Temperature Invalid". My guess is you have an incorrect wire plugged into the temperature sensor and the temperature plug is somewhere else. I looked at my old thermostat and the temperature sensor and the thermostat wires appear interchangeable.
I kept record of which wire plug went to it's original place. I don't know if your wires are the same but my thermostat sensor plug has two wires and the plug is black with a blue strip. Looking at the thermostat assembly from the drivers side front wheel, the thermostat sensor is located about four o'clock facing back toward the firewall.
The temperature sensor is located on the top of the assembly and the plug is two wire, green with a blue stripe.
The oil sender plug is 2 wire, light gray with a blue stripe. The only other connector that might match up is the plug that goes on the air tube near the turbo. That is a 2 wire plug, brown in color w/ blue stripe.
Check the plugs listed above, see if they are plugged in correctly. Good luck!

Currently I have 2 wire yellow and white going into air. Single wire grey going into block. 2 wire orange and black into temp sensor.
For the code being thrown, take a look at this NAM thread here. He replaced the temp sensor 13-62-7-535-068 and o-ring 11-53-7-547-824, which ultimately resolved his issue. That being said the tstat does come with this new sensor so it may not be your issue. We have a thermostat DIY here that can help you with going over all the sensors and wires to make sure they're plugged in correctly.

Thanks all- I indeed had them plugged in to the wrong location. Car is running much smoother however the CEL would not clear. I even stopped in at dealership they couldn't get it to clear so maybe my problems are not over.
I figured it was plugged in wrong, glad you were able to get it fixed, we have the thermostat replacement here as well as the water pipe, water pump ( in metal ) , aux pump, and some other tricks.

You're very welcome. Glad they were useful to you. As for the codes, see if the CEL goes away with a few drive cycles. If not, may need to dig into it and see what may be the issue.
Pelican, I can't remember the code but it was stating my thermo stat open after I changed mine out, but I still get heat? so I'm confused...to my understanding if the thermo is open or out in other past vehicles no heat from core...
so is the ecu reading something wrong? tried to clear with OBD II code reader will clear for a drive but then come back shortly after. 09 MCS 83,000 miles
The thermostat sensor itself could be bad, what is you reading Coachminis ? Also did you install the wires , also need to know model and year, some have a piggyback conversion ( adapter lead ) wire.
We have seen only a few thermos over 1000's have a bad factory sensor. Most have not been installed correctly or the wire harness was plug snapped the tab and is just pushed in. Very rare cases the temp sensor at the top was bad.
I would start with checking those. Pull the top temp sensor off the old thermostat and put it o the new one. If everything else check out fine. I have installed a bunch of thermos so I know what can be touchy.

Might just be a faulty new thermostat, MINI parts have 2 year unlimited mileage warranty so I would contact them and get a new one. See if they will cover the repair there also. Some dealership will cover it if its an OEM part installed.
Yes I know thought you said you have done may thermo housing replacements...

You are welcome, I have messed with a bunch of these thermostats. We had only a few have issues over 1000's. Contact the dealership and see what they can do, they might change it for you.
