2012 Sunroof rattles--can I fix them?

Did a search but couldn't find what I was looking for. Trying to find out how to adjust the sunroof. Had a rattle, took it to the dealer twice and now it's much worse. And, of course I am now out of warranty. Not too happy with the local Mini service either. After the botched work they left dark fingerprints on the headliner

I have a slight rattle as well, I found if I BARELY open them, just a slight touch so their not really open but there is pressure on them it gets rid of it.
Hope this helps!

You can take the glass out. Sunroofs in BMW products have sucked for a very long time. I would suggest looking into a Bentley manual. When you get it apart you might find out you need new tracks. You can clean the tracks and then grease them up.

I had the same problem for a while and it drove me crazy...dealer would fix the rattle and then it would come right back after a few days.

I finally had enough and took a torx key to the bolts on the rear sunroof panel and jiggy'd around with it. I didn't do anything particularly fancy to align it, but I made sure that I tightened all the bolts back up properly. 2 years later and no more rattling, and no leaks either

2 things I did to fix my rattles.

1 - Open roof, and pull back trim on interior. Add "friction tape" in about 8 points around the plastic that the trip clips to. Friction tape is a cloth tape that dealers use to kill rattles. This rattle would happen (more of a creek) when going over cross bumps like turning into my driveway (slope). Fixed that nicely. Creek was much worse in humid weather or when it was cold out.

2 - I had a clicking / rattle from the rear roof section. Only happened when the roof was in the vent position. Tracked it down to the two rear struts that support the rear glass section. Opened roof (vent), covered off area so spray would not get inside car, sprayed a graphite based lube on the rear struts at the hinge points. Fixed it, been fixed for two years now.. the car had made this noise since day 1.

Yearly cleaning of the drain holes, and cleaning the tracks with a micro fiber towel helps as well. A lot of grit winds up on the tracks.

Excellent! Thanks for all the help as I don't want to return to the dealer. Mine has been popping and rattling, more in the rear glass area than the front, and much more since the dealer put tape under the panels. I've been running mine tilted up a bit so I don't have to listen to it! Love my Justa, but that sunroof is a downer (60's lingo).

Please describe friction tape in greater detail. My rear sunroof rattles EXCEPT when it is up. Something about a rattle when it is down and I’m going over small bumps.

Thanks,
Peter

Hi Peter,

Friction tape can be had at any good sports store, it’s the fabric tape used to wrap hockey sticks. The same type of tape can be had from an electrical supply house and is used for wire insulation.

I pulled down the inner frame slightly, applied some tape to the contact areas of the frame support and then, no more squeak sound!
