Virus being sent using gabe@motoringfile.com

I just received an e-mail with an attached virus and the sender name is gabe@motoringfile.com. If you received that e-mail and it has an attachment, scan it before opening it.

I am not stating it's coming from motoringfile but only that it uses gabes name and his domain as the sender.

Just a friendly warning..and sorry if it's in the wrong forum!

ugh - I was literally going out the door when I saw this thread. Well I would assume my address was picked up by a automated bot of some kind that went through MotoringFile recently. What they do is use my address and then grab address found elsewhere on the site and send a virus out while spoofing my address. In fact I've recieved this same type of thing from a handful other people within the MINI community myself.

Please disregard any email sent out from me with an attachment!

All this virus stuff makes me happy I use OSX!

yeah I saw this, my Mc Affe picked it up real-quick. Glad I use the wonderful E-Mail reader called PINE :-) Old school, but (to my knowledge) telnet can't spread viruses onto windoze machines...

PINE!! That's definitely old school. I think I used to read mail off a honeywell mainframe using PINE. Are you using an ISP that still gives you a shell account?

yeah, using a Debian Linux box for my ISP. My web server is Red-Hat. My previous employer (and ISP) is old school like that. Also has a web-based E-Mail reader (squirrel mail). I still jump into VI for old times sake editing stuff. Tho I haven't really figured out "EX". I do some work on JCL and Focus at work, so I'm used to text-based OS's.

but... Great reliability AND every virus attack that comes out, he cracks a beer at home and laughs

I run Windoze machines at work and home, but with some of my Ableton stuff, I'm seriously debating about an OS-X machine...

heh. I'm still getting all my mail with elm/vi from the mail server run by a previous employer I haven't worked for in over 5 years. Tried switching to mutt or pine several times with no success.Windows mail readers give me the *******.

To add to what Gabe said, _never_ open email attachments from anyone you don't know. I go so far as to never open attachments I'm not expecting.

I will relate a very sad but true story. There was once a guy who received such an email. He asked the sender if it was something he had sent for him to read or maybe he should just ignore it cause it might be a virus. This "accused sender" got very defensive and nasty. Soon, several of his buddies ganged up on him, and verbally beat him up, causing the original inquirer to get very upset--who was just asking an innocent question in the beginning. He responded in kind, and the next thing you know, the world went to crap, threats of lawsuits flew around, angry threats and words exchanged and what started as an innocent question snowballed into something ugly.

It's a true story. Take it from me. If you get an email asking if you sent an email with an attachment, try to keep your cool, and don't think a question is an accusation. End of soap box.

OctaneGuy: I just sent you a innocent private message with an attachment.

By the way I'm 6'4" and 265lbs, I am a boxer & carry a loaded gun and a lawyer.
So don't worry about opening the attachment.
