Motive Pressure Bleeder question

Hello All

I picked up a Motive pressure bleeder, with the intent of bleeding the brake system in the next couple of weeks. After reading through the instructions, I have a question about one of the steps:

"9. If fluid remains in the Power Bleeder tank when through: tip the tank away from fluid pick-up tube and open bleed valve closest to the master cylinder. Allow air to flow into fluid reservoir until fluid level falls just to the maximum fill level on your reservoir. Close the bleed valve and tighten to specified torque."

This makes no sense to me...why would you allow air to flow in to the fluid reservoir? Seems to me this could introduce air in to the system...wouldn't it make more sense to just skip this step and slowly loosen the Motive Bleeder lid to relieve the pressure?

What am I missing?

thanks,
Michael

If you don't do this the fluid reservoir in the car will be over full and fluid will blow all over the place when you open the Motive lid. Don't forget, there is always air over the top of the fluid in the reservoir. Also, as it says, you are only draining enough fluid to fall to Maximum Fluid level in the reservoir not to let air into the system.

What I do is to use the Motive pressure bleeder only as a pressure source. I bleed off about 4 oz fluid from the farthest bleeder (rear right) then refill the reservoir. Then bleed about 3 oz from the next farthest (rear left) and refill. Same with the right and left front. This way I flush everything and I don't introduce any moisture from the pressure bleeder from the residual fluid from the last bleed. I also added a brass air compressor quick disconnect between the lid and pressure tank to make things easier.

Hey Eddie

Thanks - that makes perfect sense. And I've read about others just using it for a pressure source, which seems like a simple and cleaner solution. I think I'll likely go that route as well.

thanks much for the response
