I PD'd my wheels black four years ago. There are numerous videos available that ease the process. I did put several coats of Glossifier on which put on a sheen. It takes about one can per wheel. It's a simple but slightly time consuming project that inexpensively provides good results. Touch up is simple and the product is easy to work. Best part is you can remove it if so desired. After a little experience with the wheels I blacked out the rest of the MINI. Good luck.
Here is a picture of my mini from a few years ago right after I plastidipped the wheels. I have to respray them about every year or so, or any time I have new tires put on (they seem to always scratch the plasti-dip off in spots).
At first it's pretty easy to peel off if you decide you don't like it....but after being coated for a year or so, it won't just peel off.......
I PDd my factory web spokes white a few years ago, and with the white stripes (since removed), I loved the look
But when it came time to remove the PD, I regretted my decision somewhat as it was a PITA to get off. PD is cool cuz there are tons of colors to choose from, and technically it is temporary. But as others said, you may have to respray, and in my experience removal was not as easy as advertised. YMMV.
We used PD on my old car, that now belongs to my son.
Not a MINI, but it gives you an idea of the look on a different wheel.
Others have stated the pros/cons. We just had new tires put on the Miata last week, and the installers really messed up the PD, but we're respraying tomorrow, so they'll be good as new.
If you plan on doing any parallel parking (or rather letting someone else do it while borrowing your car) I would go with a little more permanent option. I've had mine done a few months now. I let my sister borrow the car and she curbed it. The respray process is simple, but if its raining or if you go through a wash before you've resprayed it starts to peel rather quickly. Aside from that it's a great way to try out other colors/finishes of wheels before you go permanent.
I want to plastidip my wheels too. I did the light trim, but then it got too cold to keep going. All I can find at local stores is very black. I would like to get a gun-metal gray for the rims. Does anyone know how many colors are available?
