Stuck in a speaker grill replacement mess...cannot get it off

Really need to be able to get this back into the door for the morning.

I order a nice, new speaker grill to replace my cracked on on the driver's door. From a sponsor here...

2008 mcs, new to me..prior owner must have had one bad luck foot kick...

So, I youtube the panel removal, get it off no problem. Figure these Mini engineers are quite good as the door is nicely done.

Kaboom....

Then I am here (see picture). How do you proceed without potentially damaging the door insert....pretty please help!

I have searched and people either say drill it off (gen 1) or that they went to the dealer and got a new door (gen 2 threads...one person shows it off nut no data on "how" they did it. I need the "how" really badly.

TIA

It's actually pretty simple.

1.) Use a sharp razor knife to cut off the melted plastic "rivets". Then the old cover will come off.

2.) Next using small screws (I used IIRC #5 stainless screws about 3/8" to 1/2" long that I got from the hardware store. You'll need 6 of them.

3.) Next trim the long thin plastic pieces on the new cover so that it can poke through the actual speaker cone.

Here is a photo. I haven't yet performed step #3.
