Airbag Seat Mat Sensor Recall: Canada too??
Airbag Seat Mat Sensor Recall: Canada too??
Hey guys,
I apologize if there's another thread on this, but searching brought up about 1,000 threads from the last several years about the issue, and nothing about the current recall:
http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/18/us/bmw...all/index.html
While I am aware that Canada is technically part of North America, I found during my research on the BMW 335i that the BMW North America recalls on the N54 HPFP and Turbo components did NOT apply in Canada. I have put an email in to my service advisor but I'm still waiting for a reply.
Do any fellow Canadian owners have first hand knowledge of this recent recall? I'm looking at selling or trading in my car soon, and I would love to have this issue resolved before I do so.

(CNN)BMW of North America will recall 91,800 Mini Coopers because of a faulty sensor that might not trigger the front-passenger air bag during a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Saturday.
The agency said the sensor in a detection mat might not recognize there is a passenger in the front seat and the air bag wouldn't deploy during an accident.
The affected models are 2005-2006 Mini Cooper and Cooper S vehicles manufactured between January 5, 2005, and November 28, 2006, and 2005-2008 Mini Cooper convertible and Cooper S convertibles manufactured between January 5, 2005 and July 31, 2008.

Okay, not a lot of interest!
In any case I will post my disappointing exchange with MINI Canada in case anyone is wondering about this. I initially inquired via the MINI Canada website whether this recall would apply to Canadian cars.
My reply:
And finally, the reply to my reply.
This certainly leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I've been looking into a 3er for my next car, and the N54 owners here also got the shaft regarding the HPFP/Turbo issues that were recalled/warrantied on identical cars in the US.

Hi Dan:
Thanks for writing MINI Canada. We appreciate your inquiry.
At this time, your vehicle does not have any outstanding recalls. We will notify you in writing if an applicable recall is released in the future. To have your issue looked at, we recommend making an appointment with a MINI retailer. Should you need it, you will find a complete listing of authorized retailers, categorized by name, region, or postal code, on our website at www.mini.ca. We hope you find this helpful.
If there are further questions I can assist with, please feel free to drop me an email. I will be happy to lend a hand.

Hi Dave,
Thank you very much for the prompt reply. Am I to understand that MINI Canada will not be participating in the recall initiated by MINI North America on the defective seat mat sensor in the passenger air bag system? If so, this is very troubling. It's the same part in Canadian market vehicles, and a failure is a serious safety issue. I have been very pleased with the service I've received at MINI Victoria over the years, and I have spoken with them about my failed sensor. My quote for the replacement cost of the seat mat was about $1,200. This is an unacceptable cost to replace a part that is known to be defective.
Sincerely,
Dan

Hi Dan:
Thanks for your reply.
As of right now, there are no open recalls listed on your vehicle. If a recall comes up in the future, you will be notified. We have not gotten any information at this time about MINI Canada issuing a new recall, but if it does come about and your VIN is affected, you would be eligible for reimbursement for any parts that you had replaced affected by the recall. You would just need to keep your work orders.

I haven't seen anybody report getting a recall notice yet. I suspect they haven't started the process, and in the meantime are sending out canned responses similar to what you received, even in the US
Different countries different rules. Not sure what constitutes a "defect" in the sensor. As I understand it, the seats on my car (early build 2005 so doesn't fit in this recall anyways) are actually made in Canada and meet Canadian standards. The seats in the US based cars need to meet US based regulations.
Politics being politics, cars exported/imported to certain countries need to contain a certain percentage of parts made in that country. It is possible the sensors in the US based cars are US spec only.
For those anxiously awaiting their recall notice, from past experience with other cars, you'll probably get a notice about 3 months after the media has announced it. The parts need to get to the dealerships. If the recall was really that serious a safety issue, it would have been fixed already.

I just got my letter for the seat sensor.... For my 05, the car that doesn't show a problem.
They likely don't know I got my 06 yet that does have the exact problem as described in the letter. I will investigate further.
As mentioned above, they will inform us by letter when they are ready for the recall, and at that time we are to schedule the appointment.
