Engine noise while in sport mode?

When my wife put her CMS in sport mode and give the car an Italian tune up, when coasting or slowing down afterward, there seems to be some sort of noise from the engine. It sounds like several backfires but not as loud, it almost sounds like puffs of air releasing. Could it be the turbo relieving? I just want to make sure this sound is normal.

Pop and burble. An enjoyment common to the Gen 1 S. On the other hand, there were a few who thought it rather silly or even obnoxious but most found it endearing.

Mini made it so, for me it sounds like a malfunction in the engine. But there are people who like this artificial sound

Is the 2015 CM S still consider a Gen 1?
The sound doesn't bother me that much, I just want to make sure there is nothing wrong. It doesn't make the pop and burble sound when I am not in sport mode.

Just turbo noise thru exhaust. The colder the air the louder it is. There are valves you can buy to enhance the blow off, mostly used by hard drivers. If you replace exhaust with sport exhaust ( magna flow, borla, etc. ) sound is amplified.

You have discovered the "pop and burble"!

You'll hear this in Sport mode on any 2011+ Cooper S MINI. It's a manufactured sound to make sport mode a little..."sportier". It's by design and nothing to worry about.

I, personally, love the good old P&B

I have a magnaflow exhaust and a cold air filter and in sport mode, I don't get the burble anymore, more overall it sounds more aggressive

I have the JCW exhaust and in Sport my pops and burbles are more like gunshots and growls...Enough so that I turn it off when going into my neighborhood... Stupid being a responsible and considerate adult...

I'm curious what actually causes the sounds. Rich gas mixture? Any risk of carbon buildup?

I'm also curious if running sport mode 100% of the time will cause any issues that I'll regret later?

Real minute bits of excess fuel being introduced to the exhaust manifold.

Haven't heard of any issues being in Sport all the time, besides muscle strain in your face from smiling so damn much.
