I have switched to non-RFTs on both my MINI and my Bimmer.
Better tires, better handling, better traction, better prices.

In case of puncture, I can go longer than max 50 miles on RFTs with a quality good kit and/or Dynaplug:

For summer tires, it's hard to do better than Michelin PSS's (unless you autoX and need the last fraction of a second).

YMMV,

I went with run flats for snows. Picked up a nail while skiing at Stowe, VT and 10 degF day. Didn't even think about getting it fixed until I got back home. Just put air into it when the low pressure warning light came on (at about 24 psi). No damage and it was repairable. No hassle with fix-a-flat and all that. Well worth the money and slightly poorer ride (Bridgestone LM-60 rft), but the ride is much better than the OEM Conti tires the car came with.

I would skip the studs. On dry or wet pavement they will have much less traction than none studded tires.

For summer tires I would get a good all season tire, non RFT.

R113 or R105 JCW wheel and tire package ? Those are some of my personal favorites. Steelies and good snow tires will set you up well for winter. The studded will give you extra grip on that black ice, but they are a little louder on dry pavement. Good luck and post up pics when you get them installed.

Ordered nokian Hakka 8 studded tires. 205/45-17, to go on factory wheels.

Ordered the 18's from Ecs. Run flats.

Kenny...have had Nokians (Hak Rs) on both my prior Miatas and am already thinking about snow tires for the new R59 for the Iowa winters. Nokians have served me well in the past and would love to hear of your winter experience with the 17" Hak 8 studded tires...figure its either those or new edition of the studdless R2. Thanks in advance!

Best studded tire ever.
Climbed the local toboggan hill with the mini. I had a set of brand new Firestone studs on my wife's Lexus. I ended up selling them, and will order a set of haka's for it, in the fall.
I do a lot of highway driving, and I like how the studs can retract on hard surfaces.
Amazing traction on ice.

Living in the Central Valley of California I don't have to worry about winter, summer, snow tiresl. I just have to get a get set of all season tires. I don't ski anymore so if I chose ot go to the snow I choose good day to take Grand Kids. I do have a goo set of chains for each ehicl including the MIni. I have 16" wheels on there now bout the the OEM 15 that the chains fit so I will just change wheels if we go the the sonw or just put he 15's on lthe front.or I could mount the chains on the 15's and put them in the Boot just in case easier changing wheels that instaliing chaing in th snow

+1 on studded tire for the winter if you live in the harsh climate, on dry roads they can get a little loud , but great on black ice.

Kenny - did you get the summer wheels installed ?
