Only MINIs on board were heading to the Middle East. No North American MINIs have been delayed as a result of this incident.

This ship did not sink. It was intentionally grounded which likely saved it to sail another day. That said, the cars aboard are a total loss.

The handlful of MINIs is far less important news compared to the losses that Jag and Land Rover took

Yep. 1200 units. That's a huge loss.

The cargo is most likely just fine. I have worked on auto carriers, all the vehicles are strapped to the deck very securely. Unless seawater got into the cargo space, the cars and heavy equipment will be alright.

The cars will certainly be written off because of potential future liabilities. Any problems could be blamed on this accident and the maker sued because these cars were sold.

If the vehicles were strapped down securely in the first place, the carrier would not be listing 50 degrees!

Someone had screwed up the loading big time, and by now, the bulk of the weight (cars) has crashed on the starboard side.

No, securing the cargo is a very basic step. You can be sure that the cars are just fine, stuck to the deck at a 50 degree angle.

According to the article Mabo1uk linked us to, they think it was related to improper ballasting or fueling. Cars are relatively light, compared to other kinds of cargo and this ship wasn't even fully loaded, cars would have little affect on the vessel's trim.

It sounds like the ship's list was increasing before they grounded it. That tells me that someone was transferring ballast or fuel, without first checking with the chief mate to see that they were following the ballast plan.

I've been a ship's officer for 27 years, including working on auto carriers, those cars haven't moved from the spot they were parked in when they were loaded.

Read an article on BBC's website that says the ship re-floated itself today!

similar incident in the Bering Sea with a ship load of Mazdas

Cougar Ace

in this article, is a photo gallery of the 'destruction plant' Mazda set up. Altho only "a few" of the cars came loose and damaged other cars, Mazda (or their insurance company) decided it was wiser to destroy the 4700+ cars and small trucks . . .

Battered: A Mini Cooper with a dented door is driven from the ship. It is one of 65 Minis that were on board at the time the ship started to list
