The topmost peace where your strut is connected has came apart. It is very hard to explain with my little knowledge on cars. Check the picture to see what I mean. Someone I had look at it called it a top hat.

It's the right side that's affected.

Here is the left side that is not broken for a frame of reference.

Anyways I have been driving it with that broken for a couple months. It causes a squeaky noise when the wheel gets turned.

I am wondering how to specifically describe this issue and find any information I can on how to get this fixed so I can have an idea for how much it would cost.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I posted this on bimmerforums and found out what I needed.

The guy had it right. You need to replace the top hat. A local shop should be able to run you a quote pretty quickly.

Yes that is a broken upper strut mount. Pretty common issue.

We keep them in stock if you want one.

Not to add more bad new. But first yes you need a new mount. But in your pic it looks like you also suffered some mushrooming of the shock tower. The stud on the left of the first pic appears to not be straight up and down but angled out wards. You may wann check that.

Yup. Loosen the. Nuts. Take the weight off the suspension a bit and wack them down with a block of wood and a BFH. Replace the mounts and call it a day. Maybe buy the reinforcement plates.

May want to get an alignment afterwards

Sorry hated to give you the bad news. But better now than later. Shame it's a common issue.

This pic looks like you have very little mushrooming. The new mount will make it straight and a 2x4 and a hammer will put the sheet metal back down. But after that some Craven Strut Tower Defenders should be installed to prevent it from happening again.
