Non h/k stereo

Hello,

I am looking to verify the how the non-H/K head unit works. From what I understand the H/K headunit does not control the voltage level of its output (read: volume control), leaving that up to the H/K amp. I am looking to gut the H/K amp, but want to keep stock appearance.

Can I get a standard head unit from a Non-H/K R53, and use that with some line level converters to run my own amplifier, while also keeping the steering wheel controls? What I am asking is on the stock stereo (non H/K) does it contain internal amplifiers with volume control on the outputs, as well as integrate with the steering wheel controls and AUX input?

I have a whole stereo setup from my previous car I would like to run, while the H/K setup is amazing for a stock system, I am a tinkerer and need to build my own. haha

Thanks,
Matt

From what I understand, the head unit itself is the same in both the H/K and standard setup.

How & where it outputs - I have no idea.
