R56 Powdercoating some go fast stuff
Powdercoating some go fast stuff
Hey so here's the deal I work at a wheel powdercoating shop, I've got some extra powder and time on my hands. Planning on shooting the compressor side of my turbo, the heat shield and my K&N typhoon intake tube and air box a blue that matches my car. Anyone had experience shooting a turbo? It's my only concern, how far would I need to tear it down to prevent damage? I've done some research and I'll be using high temp tape to mask off any connectors am internal components. If anyone's had experience chime in, if not I'll upload the results by the end of the weekend. MOTOR ON FRIENDS
I would not powder coat the turbo. Not because you will tear it up but, because the heat will just take the powder coating off. I would ceramic coat that. I would like to do that to my turbo since I have already done the heat shield and the down pipe.
As far as tearing it down to get the turbo off, just get a Bentley manual and go into service mode because it is a lot easier. I did a turbo swap without going into service mode and it was a PITA. I could have probably save a couple of hours of work if it was in service mode.

I've read that the compressor side doesn't get above 400f powder bakes that hot, if you have experience trying it tho I may wait and do both with ceramic. I'm gonna go pick up a ceramic gun since we have everything else and I believe it's the same process give or take some temps. My heat shield I'm gonna do white so ceramic would be needed since white would show any burns easily. Should be cool when I'm finished up.
