Hard starts
Hard starts
Hi,
I've been having periodic hard starts and was wondering if anybody could shed some light. Every few days when the car has been sitting for a while, it is difficult to start. It usually takes two button pushes to get it going. Once running, it runs great. I've had the HPFP changed and the temperature sensor changed, but still have the problem.
Any advise on what it could be?
Thanks.
It's a 2009 JCW Clubman.

I would start by checking the condition of your spark plugs. Repair or replace as required.
Then experiment, for example: turn key on, depress accelerator and release, push start, Did it start?
Turn key on and wait, 10 seconds for fuel pump to pump... Press start, Did it start?
Those are the two biggies, does she have fuel, does she have fire...
Best of luck, happy motoring!

And it's not throwing any codes? IDK. My next guess would be coil packs but it's really just a guess at that point. Also, see if you can read up on what causes the fuel pump to prime. Some cars it just requires turning the key to the "on" position and on other cars it requires actually cranking the engine over. If you can get the fuel pump to prime and then try and start it. Maybe you're not holding fuel pressure while it's sitting for a while.
I was going to check the fuel pressure from the tank to the HPFP to see if I was loosing any pressure over time.
Can someone tell me where I can find the fuel pressure tap in line to attach a fuel pressure gauge on these cars? Picture would be good if possible.
Thanks.

How recently was the HPFP replaced? My car had the exact same problem and it was remedied by replacing the HPFP. Apparently it's very common for them to crap out.

The other problem I am seeing since the hard start issue started is that my fuel consumption is much worse than it has been in the past.... Could it be a timing issue? A thermostat issue?
It is also worse when it's cold out. If it's cold and the car sits, it will take two button pushes to get it going...
Any help would be greatly appreciated, it's driving me crazy especially with the bad mileage that I'm getting.

It could be any number of things but its pretty much impossible to troubleshoot over the internet. Either you need to be able to diagnose the issue mostly yourself or take it to a shop that can do it for you. Could be fuel pump, or carbon deposits, or freezing intake manifold. But at best all we can do is guess using the kind of limited information you've provided.
