Oil Filter

I am about to change oil myself and shopping around for oil filters.. I see neither Mann or Mahle don't come with brass washer. Only the OEM filter does.. Can I reuse the one that's in the car now? What's Do you guys think? Thank you for your input.

It's not necessary to change every time. if it's worn, you could probably get by with flipping it over on the opposite side.

Your best to change it every time. You can buy packs of crush washers at places like AutoZone if you don't buy OEM filters. The OEM filter comes with the o-ring for the cap and crush washer for the drain plug.

It's a copper crush washer & if you reuse it you are likely to get a drip of oil from it. I went to the local auto parts store & bought 15 or so crush washers for $1.50. I always use Mann filters or an oem.

I would just get a new one Gen 2 filters of course. You don't want to have a leak or be low on oil , and that copper seal when crushed provides the seal.

You can get the washer , its linked under the Gen 2 filters.

if buying from autozone

the crush ring has an outside diameter of 22mm, a thickness of 3mm

because of how the bung fits INTO the pan .. you can't get too sloppy on the fit ...

O'Rielley (sic) has WIX filters with the crush washer and the oil filter cover o-ring.

IMO best filter you can buy.

Or in a pinch, you can cut one out of rubber. Or a neoprene washer, which is even better. Either should last till your next change. FWIW.

Why?

Just re-use the old washer, and torque to spec.
I've been doing it on and off between oil changes for the past 6 years: 50% of the time with Mann (German) oil filter re-using old copper washer, the other 50% of the time with OEM (French) oil filters that come with the new washer. Zero oil seepage either way.

I've had to use makeshift washers in the past when either the installed washer was trashed or lost. And to get a new one you need your car which is waiting for the sump plug to be put back in, along with oil.

I spent about 25.00 at NAPA to buy an assortment of drain plug washers, 4 or 5 each in copper and aluminum, common sizes, for my "other" cars. For my MINI? Only the factory oil filter kit with the o-ring and proper crush washer. Why? Because a small-block Chevy, or even a 4.6 Ford engine is WAAAY cheaper to replace/rebuild than a MINI engine! Cheap insurance. Spend a little now, or a LOT later!
