Crank, Con Rod & Engine Dimensions and Tolerances Needed

I've been looking for detailed specs on the W11 engine, crank and connecting rod dimensions so I can check to see whether my parts are within wear limits but can't find the specs anywhere. Very surprised to discover it is left out of the Bentley manual.

Can anyone post the numbers? Please ?

I will be happy with whatever people have, but am looking for these sort of numbers: (All for Standard size)

1) Cylinder bore diameter (Min/Max) and service/wear limit.
2) Ring gap values

3) Crank Main Bearing Journal Diameter (range)
4) Crank Free End Play
5) Connecting Rod Journal Diameter (range)

6) Connecting Rod Bearing to Crankshaft Clearance (desired / allowable range)
7) Main Bearing to Crankshaft Clearance (desired/allowable range)

8) Piston pin diameter (range)

1. New engine blocks are 76.992-77.008mm with permitted roundness and conicity of 0.0076mm and 0.051mm, respectively. There's no stated limit to wear but if you're over the 77.008mm limit then you need oversized pistons. There's a 0.100mm max allowable clearance between piston and bore.

2. First groove = 0.200-0.360mm; second groove 0.250-0.460mm; third groove 0.200-0.580mm

3. 47.922-48.008mm

4. 0.090-0.240mm when new; 0.300 wear limit

5. The rod journals on the crankshaft are 45.992-46.008mm

6. 0.023-0.067mm new; 0.070mm wear limit

7. 0.022-0.062mm new; 0.070 wear limit <-- full disclosure, my repair manual says 0.700mm wear limit but I believe this is a typo and should be the same as the rod clearance limit.

8. No spec on the pin diameter but the mating hole in the connecting rod is 21.009-21.019mm with 0.023-0.067mm clearance when new; 0.070mm clearance wear limit

Looks like the only problem I have is one of the Conrod Bearing Journals on the crank has some wear/damage but should be within the limits of the +0.25mm bearings if I can find someone to grind the crank...

BUT, this is weird, both realoem and the dealers that post parts lists online show 44mm bearings for the con rod bearing on these engine, while the link above to engine specs (and my own physical measurements) show that to be 46 mm. I measure the good conrod bearing journals to be close to 46.00 mm still... and the bad one is 45.98 mm or so.

How do I find the proper con rod bearing shells? ... I guess I need the 45.75mm (+0.25) bearing shells....

Thanks again!

David

If you look in the above document you will see that W11 is 46 and W10 is 44. You can get stock and +25 from ECS Correct part # is 11241492122 stock size and
11247829983 for +0.25. Listings are wrong at both BMW and ESC (44mm) but they are the correct bearings (have ordered them and they fit).

44mm are part #
11241485577

So no worries just order which of the above you need!

Probably should start a new thread for this.
I am assuming you mean the 2008 R52 and 2002 R53 are both Cooper S (W11 Engine).

I start by comparing part numbers on Realoem.

2008
Crankshaft is 11217546618
Flywheel for MT variant is 21207532057
Flywheel for AT variant is 11227541071

2002
Crankshaft 11217546618
Flywheel for MT variant - 21207532057
Flywheel for AT variant - 11227541071

Looks like the crank and flywheels didn't change between 2002 and 2008. If it is a Cooper version, you should check that or post again.

I changed my flywheel and clutch last summer and found the best price on the LuK brand (supposed to be OEM) at Amazon. Its always worth checking around.

LuK Dual-mass flywheel $275 now (ranges from $225 to $300 depending on their mood).
Amazon.com: LuK DMF089 Flywheel: Automotive Amazon.com: LuK DMF089 Flywheel: Automotive

LuK clutch kit $103 (the picture is generic, ignore that)
Amazon.com: LuK 03-050 Clutch Set: Automotive Amazon.com: LuK 03-050 Clutch Set: Automotive

Need an Undersize Rod Bearing

I screwed up a friends 2003 Mini Cooper S 6-speed. I replaced the clutch and fired the engine up while the front end was still up on jack stands. Apparently it was at too steep an angle so I starved the engine of oil and spun a rod bearing. SON OF A _____! Not knowing enough about what I was doing I sanded down the journal from under the car. Not being aware how close the bearing tolerances had to be, I took the journal down to where all the scratches were gone. I put a new bearing in and the car ran fine until I got on it. Then the bearing spun again apparently because I had taken WAY too much off the journal. So now the low spot is .022 undersize. The only undersize bearing I have found is from BMW and it is .010 thousandths or .025mm undersize. I have found a company that sells bearing shims that will make up another .010 which still leaves me .002 short of where I need to be. And, the journal is not yet round. The high spot is .018 higher! Ughh. So I have some work to do to get the entire journal down to 1.790 thousandths from 1.812 without taking any more material off the low spot. I could run a second shim, (they are available from my supplier in 1,2 3,4 and 5 thousandths) but I'm afraid they might not lock in the bore and spin? What I REALLY need is a bearing that is more undersize than .025. Does anyone know where I can find one? I have spent hours on the internet looking with no success. Any help would be much appreciated. I do NOT want to pull the engine to fix this. I AM going to do it my way whether it works or not, so please no "it can't be done or it is stupid comments." I know this is not the correct way to do the job but it is the way I'm going to do it. If it doesn't work, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. I hate F___ING UP! Thanks for reading this! By the way, Mr. Bean provided the following info that appears to indicate the journal can go .027 undersize. I just need the bearing to do it.

I have not found any bearings that are more oversized than that. You need to pull the engine and replace the crank. But they are no longer available, so the saga begins by scouring ebay and car-part.com looking for a good condition used crank. Then put the right sized bearings in. Then disconnect the fuel pump fuse before trying to start it the first time and let the oil pressure build properly, then start it...

When the marking on the rod bearing shell says it is +0.25, does this mean a single shell (a half of the circle) has +0.25 mm added to the thickness (i.e. the ID will be reduced by 0.5mm), or the pair of them (full circle) will be have 0.25 extra thickness (i.e. the ID will be reduced by 0.25 mm)?

Old thread... I know... Are those clearance numbers accurate??? (0.023mm, less than 0.001" )
