Thought I'd share my dubious adventure of spray painting my 2002 r50 in the parking lot of my apartment building.

I used "2 part" paint cans (20 of them!) they are expensive at $23 a can, but end results don't look bad for a complete amateur.

 

You can do the other half next weekend...

I think MACCO would have been a lot cheaper?

 

I think it would have been even neater if you had changed the roof (and mirror) colors left for right!

Yes it would have only if you would have used their paint. If you being your own in and do the prep work MACCO would give you a good paint job. Those guys are not amateurs like Jiffy lube.


OP nice job! If I have one piece of advice for you is next time consider doing it in a garage if you have one. The wind was kind of freaking me out when you first started on your passenger door and you only had that window masked. Like you stated you were not using auto part off the shelf paint and you can tell because at least in your video the quality looks really good. Hope to see you at MTTS in SF.

 

Reminds me of that classic Star Trek episode. You need to do another car with the colours reversed!

 

You're totally right about not masking enough when I was spraying the primer. I wasted a couple of hours trying to clean overspray off windows, chrome, wheels etc.

Also, I think you're spot on about taking it to MACCO for the actual painting -- I suspect I could have had it painted for close to what I spent on materials.

I did go to one neighborhood body shop for a quote six months ago, and they quoted a estimate of $3,200, if they did the prep work ($500 was extra for changing the paint color). It's not a high end shop, and after doing the work, that price seems down right reasonable.

I don't have a garage, but I had a fur tree dropping stuff in the clear coat and big tractor/trailer trucks driving by every 5 minutes.

1500 grit sand paper fixed most of the really ugly spots.

 

I guess the only other consideration is to maybe pick up one of those tents that is big enough to park you car under and then do the work. Maybe even rent one if you don't see yourself spending that much time outside.

 

+1 "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield". Don't do another one the opposite though, in the end they both destroy each other.

I showed the video to my wife, who currently drives this:

so she's no stranger to "unique" cars, and she said "I want that on my next car!".

It pains me to say this (I usually don't like the blackout look) but I think on your car you should go with black wheels, mirrors and blackout trim on the black side, and keep the silver wheels and chrome on the white side, for a full "good versus evil" thing. You could Plastidip the wheels to see what it would look like.
