First attempt at plati dip

(Technically, its my second..lol) I did the headlight rings, the badge in the rear and the gas cap. I think I will buy a black cover for the handles though. I can tell being handled daily it will be an issue. After that, the scuttles...then I am done! The headlight rings are no where near perfect but you know what, I am begginingg to see how they will have to be redone soon enough so I will wait and redo both of them completely. It is easy, but I can tell it is by no means long term. (That is a good thing because actually, I took them off on the very first attempt and simply retaped everything and started over. No harm, no foul.)

I found that the green and yellow FrogTape to work well for PlastiDip.

The yellow is low adhesion so you need to be sure the edges are down before you start spraying.

While you have the can out give your door handles a shot . I too thought it would never last but I've only had to touch them up twice in the past 18 months .

With good prep, you'll be surprised how well it holds up. I've gone through winters in New England, and the headlight rings have held up very well. You're right about handles though. If you're in and out of your car as much as I am, it won't hold up.

Did you use the method to pull up the tape while the last coat drys?. It looks great.

The stripes are a stripe kit. I wish I was that good. It would have saved a lot on getting them put on.

I plasti dipped the headlight circles, gas cap, door handles now, the rear badge. ONe last thing to do and I will post the "after" shots soon enough.

The handles.....its true. They wont hold up but I have been playing around with this stuff to know it takes about 10 minutes of prep ...and you only need maybe two quick coats to respray the worn areas.

Its all so freaking easy. Wow.

Eric - If you take your time, you can dismantle the side scuttles and dip only the large piece. I did that to leave just a touch of chrome.

And with a couple of screws removed, the chrome gas cap is a breeze to dip too.

Oh believe me, I am all over that. Pretty much every piece of chrome will be uh...handled. Just give me a little time. The gas cap is already done. The door handles will be resprayed tonight. Woohoo.

Scuttles done.

It turns out, you dont have to take it off the car. This was a very easy piece to deal with.

I wish the r53 came with the jcw badge like that on the scuttles but NICE JOB!

I left the jcw badge alone in the rear of my car and only did the Cooper S lettering.

I would love to see some pics of your entire mini dipped. Did you do it yourself or pay someone?
