Newbie Wanting to Stance

Hello all,

I am relatively new to the mini world. I just recently got my 2008 r56 about 4 months ago. I'm also relatively new to the stance world. I am looking to drop my mini pretty low and have an aggressive wheel fitment. I am just really confused as to what offset looks best with which width and how big of a diameter. I really enjoy the look of 16's on minis when they are low and when they have slight camber. This is the look I am going for:

Can anyone kindly help a newbie?! Thanks!

Are you, by any chance, related to Mr. wide stance ex-senator Larry Craig?

Seriously, the car in picture is not driveable as-is.
That's the look you get after you deflate air suspension to impress ... someone? If you attempt to drive it before re-inflating the bags, you will re-sculpt the fenders and a bunch of other body panels.

110% for show.
-10% for go.

How about this?

Do you think this would be a more achievable static setup? I'm just looking to go low, and I'll eventually trim the fenders.

it depends what kind of coil set up you want.. if you want to slam your mini for a cheap price grab some VMAXX coils. your going to need adjustable camber plates and endlinks to get the negative camber to get your wheels to tuck

That first image you posted you cant drive that way. Not to say you cant drive low either.

Here is a R53 I got to see over the weekend at SOWO. He drives this low.

This picture is from Simply Clean and not from SOWO but the car looks the same in respect to wheel, tire and height. The set up is staggered 16-inch wheels. I think 8 and 8.5

It's only a matter of time before the stanced honda civic owners graduate from rusted civics to rusted R53's.

I can appreciate a good stanced car but would never own one. There are so many civic around south florida with what I call "the mexican poke". They put so many wheels spacers on their cars their wheels are not even "hellaflush" they're just poked out.

Yeah that's Spencer Barr's Mini. I follow him on instagram, and I love his setup. I really am just looking for coils that will drop me low enough to have my rear wheels sit slightly flush with the fender. I'm definitely going for 16's, I think they look the best on the minis. I'm not worried so much about the ride quality, because I would expect a rough ride with any type of coils. I've read good and bad on vmaxx coils, but they seem the cheapest. I just don't want to buy suspension that is going to leave me stranded in a couple thousand miles. Does anyone have any experience with vmaxx coils?

I dont have exp with them on Minis but on other models we very much stay away from those. I am personally going to go with BC and getting the extreme lows - which is a smaller shock body and harder spring rate for lower vehicles.

Cheap coils aren't going to leave you stranded. It's not like there is something on them that could catastrophically fail and leave you stuck on the side of the road. The thing that you get with nicer coils would be shock valving, spring rates, rust resistance, etc.

EDIT: The cars you're seeing here look that way because of hours and hours and hours of trial fittings. This isn't something that just comes in a box and you bolt it on. It's going to take some work and you're probably going to have to make some mistakes.

I'm with you on the 16" wheels, but for a different reason - more performance tire choices at lower prices.

You should not generalize anything about ride quality or performance with coil-overs. Remember - OEM suspension on MINIs is coil-over, it's just that the ride height is fixed. The spring rates and height can be swapped on the OEM suspension, so if you only want to slam the car you can just swap out the springs.

If you want to play with camber, you need adjustable camber plates (front) and control arms (rear) and they can go with either OEM or after-market shocks - same effect.

What you get with quality coil-over kits are better and adjustable shocks that usually result in better ride than OEM on the softest settings! The other benefit of adjustable coil-overs is ability to adjust the ride height with the same set of springs (vs. swapping out the springs on OEM suspension).

Cheap junk with mis-matched spring rates to shock valving.
