F55/F56 3M Defender Spray
3M Defender Spray
Does anybody have any experience with how this spray protector film compares to the sheet films for the same purpose? My local car wash/ detailer guy suggested it. He wants $125 to do half hood, mirrors and headlights. I had priced Expel at around $250 for same so I'm a bit skeptical. I'm not as concerned with the price as I am with getting something that will really help with rock chip protection.
I've read the reviews on Amazon and the stuff peels right off except the over spray (so good masking is a must). Most folks seemed to think it didn't hold up well rock chips but worked farily well with bugs. I'm still not convinced as yet. But it's definately cheaper than the sheet films.
I tried it on my BMW M3, and it made a complete mess; the nozzles jammed up every time and shot blobs of the plastic on the car. I desperately worked to get it off before it dries. I had read that it is water soluble until it dries so wet towels got if off. I then read the directions again and watched the video three times to be sure I was doing it right; right temperature (actually in an air condition 72 degree garage). I tried it again; same mess. Same desperate race to get the blobs off the from my 2013 M3. That was enough for me. I sent 3M a nastygram and they did respond. They sent me a mailer to return the product and the sent me a replacement bottle of blobs. I took the replacement back to the store and got my money back.
I did this on my Acura and won't touch it again with a 10 foot pole. It looks good initially but it is all down hill from there. It quickly loses its surface finish and then gets a little tacky. Bugs stick to it, it looks awful. I tired it for less than a year and I decided to get rid of it. That was even worse. It does not peel off like advertised. Took me hours and ended up dissolving it with 3M adhesive remover and scratching my clear coat. The adhesive removed ran down and damaged my head lights.
Don't do it! I'm surprised they still sell it.

No. I don't think so. I have heard bad things about this stuff and the fact that it isn't glossy. I'd prefer to not have it look like there's something there - just some invisible protection.
I found a shop that specialize in Xpel paint protection. I'm flipping coins between just front wrap vs entire car wrap. I've heard the same mixed feedback for the spray so going with the film will be best. My plan is to get it done right after picking up the car.
I have used the 3M spray on my 09 JCW.
I have read all the reviews, both good and bad, and can tell you from my personal experience that the product does work.
But.... I will also say it is not the same as traditional clear bra type films.
1. 3M has a useful life of about 1 year. (From 3M not me)
2. Once applied, you cannot take the car thru high pressure washes or use a home pressure washer. If you do, you can break the seal from the pressure and then the bra looks cloudy when wet. (I forgot and hit it with my pressure washer)
3. It can be difficult to apply, especially if you are used to applying spray paint or rattle can paint. Use the full kit with the handle attachment and spray in one continuous stream. No start/stop strokes. That is what causes the clumping and snot.
4. Mine has been on for about 1 year, and it has a rubber texture.
5. It has stopped a ton of rock chips. No issues there. My front bumper and hood are probably on their 3 paint job so it is nice to see some protection.
6. Huge price difference. I did my front bumper for $45 or so for the kit. A front bra in my area is $300 or so without any hood coverage. I figured for the price, I could do this several times before hitting the cost of a clear bra.
I haven't tried to peel it off yet. Not sure if I will replace with the same or go the other route.

I tried it on a small test area before commiting to the entire area and removed it due to the fact it dulls the finish and to get a proper protected thickness it just didn't have a finished appearance. It was also a major pain to remove. So I went with a precut clearbra DIY and was pleased. Since the F56 is so new, a custom cut clearbra from an installer may be the only choice presently. I'd shop around for pricing.
Try out invisible mask pre-cut kit and they give you free installing tools ($75) for FEB MCS (base/JCW).
