R52 Reversed battery cables
99% chance you will need to get it towed to a shop....preferably one that knows mini's....tell them EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED.
I would check for a blown fuse....maybe one blew to protect the computer...
But unless you are accomplished as a diy'er....and know your way around the car...that is about all you can do.
When you find out what happened and the fix(I am assuming you searched for others who did the same thing)....chime back in...maybe it will help the next person.

One thing you might try before taking it the shop is to disconnect both battery terminals for a half hour. Use that time to look at every fuse, including the fuseable link on the positive battery cable. Once reconnected you may find it starts but the radio won't come on. There may be some other failures, but take it to a good shop if everything is not ok.
I assume from your comment that the starter motor does spin up when you try to start it?
