Prices for used 2nd gen when 3rd gen is out

Anyone have a feel for what will happen to used 2nd gen MINI prices when the 3rd gen MINIs become available? I expect to be looking for a used MINI in a few months. I'm hoping a lot of used MINIs get traded in for new MINIs and prices drop.

If the current "dislikes" of 3rd gen continues to be voiced, then I believe the 2nd gen may see a surge in price if not at least stabilization of depreciation.

I'd just about call it a toss up. Many MINI owners are not happy with the new 3rd generation model and that would enhance the value of the 2nd generation model. Likewise there will be a group that likes the new model. So, which way will it go? It's any bodies guess. It shouldn't stop any one from enjoying any of them.

I feel that 2nd gen prices will maintain value or increase.

Really? I love my Mini but...its just a Mini ! If you don't have some rare desirable version, than you car will be worth whatever a buyer is willing to pay for it. The best way to hold a value is to take care of it with documentation .

It's possible that the fJCW 2nd Gen will hold higher or even increase in the short term. JMHO
Since the next Gen fJCW will be one year after release maybe, so I've read.
Something like the clubman fJCW with desirable features might be even higher.
But like other posters have stated, you get what the market allows and you'll pay what the dealers/owners ask, more than likely.

If the F56's interior quality turns out to be as good as it looks in the pictures, the interior alone will make the new cars more desirable. There will always be the MINI fanatic base that mainly seems to prefer the exterior looks and center speedo of the R56, but to the general public, the exterior of the 3rd gen car will be only slightly different in their eyes to our 2nd gen MINIs, and a better looking, better quality interior will be a real plus.

As much as I love my car, I wish MINI had spent more money on the interior materials- and I bet most of you agree that MINI had to up its game to compete with some of the new small cars on the market now.

I think the car, especially a 2013, will depreciate a little more than in the past.

i think they'll stay normal until you see them start to disappear from the lots, which as far as i can tell is going to take quite some time. after that, price will probably hold steady

Actually, it's just the opposite.

The 2nd Gen MINI has been (sadly) dropping in value like a rock since late 2013.

My R56 had been depreciating an average of $2.5K/year over the past 5 years. Then, F56 release announcement came out, and its NADA, Edmunds, and KBB values dropped $3K over around 4 months span.

i think that's fairly automatic though. their value means nothing, they don't keep up with the intricacies of what the fanbase wants.

the bigger "problem" with the value is that there are SO MANY R56's out there, that's probably the biggest driver

I am very interested in this, because I hope to pick up a lightly used 2012 or maybe 2013 R56 S or JCW via some early F56 adopter trade-ins. Hopefully I can find one with at least half of the Mini new car warranty left.

The selection of the 2013 MCS and JCW's left on dealer lots is not all that great.

My thoughts: when the C6 Corvette came out, virtually everyone on the boards went crazy, hating on the design. But within 6 months of it's introduction, the value of my C5 Z06 dropped through the floor.

I think there is a rabid, small population of crazy car-nuts (like me) on these forums(Corvette, Mini, etc), but frankly, we represent a very small percentage of the buyers of these cars.

I think many people are going to love the F56 and they are going to sell very well.

As someone else mentioned, lot's of R56's out there which could also impact the resale value. That was also another issue with my C5 valuation as well.

Jeff

I'm not arguing about causation, just stating the facts.
It is also pretty typical for all old model cars to drop in value as the new model comes out. Happens across all brands, regardless of what "fan base" wants

i'm probably biased - i'm coming from the evo world - '06 prices jumped and stayed there when the evo 10 came out
