incomplete gas fill up

Granted, I've only had the car for about 1,000 miles, but there have been a couple of fillups where the pump automatically stops, and it appears that the amount of gas is about right. So I think all is good. And this has been at two different stations.

However, when I start the car, the last "marker" on the gas gauge isn't lit, indicating that the tank wasn't full.

Anyone else ever see this? Not a huge deal, but it does make accurately calculating mileage almost impossible.

Thanks

I remember reading a thread where other people were having that same problem. Supposedly in the manual it says after the pump stops to top it off once until the pump stops again. This seems to fix the problem for those who were having it.

Thanks - I've always been so neurotic about NOT pumping after it automatically stopped, that I wouldn't have thought of doing this. Will definitely be careful - don't want gas-scented shoes!

Here's the thread I found. In the thread is says the manual says to actually top off twice.

This began recently for my wife's 2011 All4. By recently I mean she's got nearly 50,000 miles, and it began within the last 5000-7000 miles. Weird. I'll mention this to her.

I had the same problem even with topping off twice. Then it started to happen more and more often. Had to bring car in for service and they fixed the issue.

I don't think this is necessarily a problem. As someone else mentioned, i actually saw it in my owner's manual. When the pump stops, I pull back on it slightly, then run again until it stops the second time, and I get all indicators.

I am curious if it has to do with a severe bend they had to put into the neck of the fuel tank in order to put the largest fuel tank possible in the CM(it's still pretty small, so I am thinking the double pump to fill it up may be related to this-just my thoughts though, I have not seen that anywhere)

this is something I guess you get used to. I have learned to never trust that you are full at the first stop. I usually let it click twice and then manually run it till it is ALMOST leaking out of the fill pipe. The first time I ever gassed up it showed 401 miles to empty. The best I can do now after 8 months of driving is 375. Not sure why the change.

Two top-offs recommended in the manual:

Well, I thought this was neatly resolved - but oddly enough, I filled up at the same station and at the same pump, and allowed the auto-shutoff to do it's thing WITHOUT the subsequent topping off as described in the manual. I figured that if I simply recognized that the auto-shutoff would leave me with just less than a totally full tank, my calculations would be ok, since I'd be consistent. Assuming it would should off at the initial "click" at the same level every time.

Well, I start up the car, and I have totally full tank!

Oh well - not sure what to think now.

I had the same thing happen to me. The super odd part is it only happened when I was visiting my family in Canada. It doesn't happen in the States...

I have been having this little problem lately too. It never happened before, but with the colder weather it's happens now. I wonder if the slightly colder temps constrict the lines just enough to make this happen. Does any one in a warmer southern climate have this happen, or is it just us notheners?

I'm north of the border and haven't had that problem during the cold snap we've had recently.

North of the border here too. Happens to me at one specific gas station. Sometimes at far from full.

I never did the top off, believed it to be a bad thing. I do it now as I am twenty minutes from the nearest station that sells premium gas. Another reason to ditch the ALL4, local station sells regular only. I have had a few hairy moments so now keep a can of premium in the shed.

My paceman does the exact same thing. I usually let it click once, then hold the handle half way down until it clicks a second time. It usually takes another gallon and a half or so. I figure only filling at half speed after the first click gives the gas going in a chance to settle as the tank nears full. Never had it overspill doing it this way.
