Is your tire pressure correct? The traction control light comes up when traction control takes over, like in a turn being taken fast, etc.

on gen1 cars, we sometimes call this the TRI-FECTA!!
It means you have a bad wheel speed sensor......the wheel speed sensors are used in ALL 3 systems on a gen1 car.....

They're pretty easy to replace, just jack up car, remove wheel, remove a bolt holding sensor to suspension, and disconnect connector. Your problem is that without the dealer's computer, you don't know which of the four failed. You could remove all four, clean them up, and reinstall. This might fix the problem and/or ID something obvious wrong with any one of them.

yup...
front two and rear two are different...
they sometimes do get stuck pretty bad...
a VERY good PRO level scan-tool can pull the info on which sensor has failed...but the typical sub $500-1000 unit cannot.

I have a scanner that is BMW specific. Just fixed my trifecta, found out which side sensor was failing. If anyone is in Boston, MA or near by needs BMW/Mini code scanned let me know. I know my scanner works on R50 for sure and also clears non OBD codes/BMW codes like the trifecta.

I picked up eBay sensor which did not fit. Old sensor was pain in the rear to remove.

I got the BeckAnley sensor it dropped in.
