Ddm and alternatives

I'm wanting to upgrade my Mini Cooper from a k&n panel filter to a cai system I'm just wonder what alternatives there are to ddm and how people like having the ddm if there is no alternative . Thanks!

there's alternatives, i think K&N, maybe ALTA, AEM, etc.. but no need for an alternative the DDM is nasty.

Also use the search function.

Go with the DDM intake we've proven many times nothing beats it

DDM intake is going to replace the piece that held your panel filter. You're gonna get more sound than just switching to a K&N panel. Do it. Enjoy.

If it's sound you want, go with the DDM. Otherwise you will sit get sound with a K&N panel filter.

If you want the sound louder check out DoS intake and DDM race intake.

^Rob, he has a Justa Cooper, not S. There is no DoS or DDM race intake for the Justas.

This is the DDM for the non-S Cooper http://www.waymotorworks.com/ddmworks-cooper-intake-r55-r56-r57.html with a dyno tested torque boost of 8 lbs.

DDM stands for 'Don't Do it Man'. Total disappointment on my Justa. It produce a loud growl that sounds hollow and cheap much like the local import compacts. The car feels and drives worst than stock. Luckily I bought mine used from a fellow NAM member so I wasn't out as much as the $250 price tag!

My experience with the DDM was also negative. I commute about 100 miles a day in Los Angeles traffic. I monitor my intake air temperature via a scangauge 2 . With the car at operating temperature and the stock intake installed, the IAT is consistently 18 degrees above ambient (stopped or moving). With the DDM the IAT is a minimum of 30 degrees above ambient(when moving) and in heavy traffic would sometimes rise to 50 degrees above ambient (stopped).

The sound is as bad as A4Some described as well.

I installed the DDM and it looks and sounds great. Reminds me of a 1970 MGB.
Money well spent.
My $.02 worth.

Anyone able to find some before and after audio clips? I guess its not technically a cold air intake is it, if it brings in warmer than stock air.

We are working on building out our 2011 Justa for SCCA solo STF class. Did a baseline dyno at Drift Office and bone stock it put down 110 whp, we put on a home brew cai kit with a 2-3/4 to 3" silicone adapter 12" of 3" aluminum tubing capped it of with a HKS racing suction intake filter.

First run it lost ~1 whp, so the dyno operator suggested a make shift heat shield out of card board. We grabbed some cardboard and roughly fitted it in front of the filter and it picked up 3 whp on the next run.

I just ordered the KN universal cold air intake kit and we will be doing some dyno pulls with that kit in the near future. I need to grab a straight section of 2-3/4 silcone tubing to plug into the afm and give the air a chance to straighten out . My thought is the kn kit will be worth about 5 whp on its own. So yes hot air is bad, very bad on these cars as it immediately pulled back timing and cut power

You are going from a close box design to a open box. The engine compartment in these cars are so small especially with the intake where it is, makes it hard to get an actual "Cold" air intake in. In the regular coopers, you probably are just better with dropping in a panel filter and get a 1mph bump. Don't hotbox your intake- no beuno!

Will do, installed it the other day still need to make a proper bracket to hold it secure. We will probably hit the dyno again in a month or so.

Best $$$ spent on my Justa

I have the K&N Typhoon intake kit (69-2005TTK). The open box design means warm air is also drawn from the engine bay, but boy does the car sound amazing. K&N claims a 4 hp gain, which doesn't sound like much, but the performance boost can be felt immediately.

Amazon.com: K&N 69-2005TTK 69 Series Typhoon Performance Intake Kit: Automotive Amazon.com: K&N 69-2005TTK 69 Series Typhoon Performance Intake Kit: Automotive

I am not sure what difference a K&N panel filter can do to a base Cooper, but putting in the kit is really not hard at all.
