Plasti Dip removal from wheels......omg!

I did it .....I Plasti Dipped my wheels white. This was two weeks ago. They get incredibly dirty and brake dust is bad. They don't stay white very long and water and soap does not clean them. It is too porous. Westley's Bleche White is a good cleaner but you have to clean them all the time. So I decided to peel the Plasti Dip off like in the videos. Well, it is almost impossible to do! It does not peel off like they show. So I've tried: paint thinner, lacquer thinner, WD 40, brake caliper cleaner, paint remover, goo gone, chrome wheel acid, bug and tar cleaner and a high pressure washer. It doesn't matter what is used......Plasti Dip does not come off easy. My advice is don't Plasti Dip your wheels if you are thinking perhaps it is a temporary mod. I am paying the price now and wish I had left my wheels alone.

Clean the Plastidip then spray on a few more layers. Let it cure for a few days and then try to peel it off.

When you first sprayed your wheels you didn't put a thick enough coat on. If you don't use enough, the plastidip will only come off in tiny flakes instead of holding together and letting you peel it off in one or two big pieces.

+1. The thicker the coating, the easier to remove.

+2 I helped peal an entire MINI. I pealed the whole bonnet in one piece. If you do it thick and let it cure it makes all the difference.

+3, thick coats come off. High pressure wand at the car wash to get the WD40 off from it first then spray it again and get it thick enough to glom onto whatever you failed to get off earlier.

You mean that one can per wheel is not enough? Really ? I read all threads and have done my grill etc with plasti dip. Coming off wheels is different with all the edges, corners etc. My wheels are ASA AR1's. Not easy between the spokes and rivets. The plasti dip was plenty thick. I'm using caliper cleaner and a tooth brush now. Thanks for the advice. I'll keep trying.

Oh, I can see how that would be tough. Good luck. You might try scraping with an old credit card too, cut it into a pointy shape to dig in.

Wow, where did you read one coat would be enough? The first coat is used for a very light textured base coat for the next coats (3 more if you're doing wheels) to better adhere to. I'm echoing everyone else, Plasti Dip will peel off very easily with a few coats, and is actually pretty fun to do.

Just did all my trim and my wheels last month with a grey tryin out the product, then this month peeled all and switched to black. Wheels were no problem, I used 4 coats over the light 50% transparent base coat.

I said one "can" per wheel not one coat! A can gives 5 to six coats per wheel. Trust and believe .....really.....removal is not easy. I finally used a pressure washer at the car wash for the surfaces and WD40 to clean out the corners-with a tooth brush! I finally got them back to original last night.

Weird, I put 4-6 coats on my parts and wheels and have done them all a few times without that kind of trouble. If the dip was a year old or older I could see it peeling off in small parts but 2 weeks, it should have come right off in one big piece. Were the spokes sharp edged or weird transitions to where the dip would separate? Did you try pulling at different angles too?

Thanks for the questions. The cans were new I only had it on for two weeks. After reading all the advice and watching you tube videos along with " dip your car .com" I went for it as I could simply peel it off. It looked good on and went on easy, it was just terrible getting it off. Again they were ASA AR1's. it probably would have been easier off a five spoke wheel or flatter designed wheel. These probably had to many corners and edges etc. I'd watch what style of wheel you put Plasti Dip on.

I dipped the 17" mcs wheels which have like 30 bolts all the way around the lip as well as like 10 spokes, there was no issue removing.. It even peeled out of the bolt heads in one piece.
