OBD Has No Power, and side mirrors' fuse blown...

Have an 06 Cooper S that has been having an issue with blowing fuse F35 for the side mirrors. Have not had any issues with electrical besides that. Everything works fine.

I went to do my bi-annual smog and the tech could not read the OBD as it had no power to it. My cigerette lighter works. I've checked all the fuses in the interior fuse box and none are blown (except the side mirrors fuse which I leave empty for now).

Can anyone suggest where to look for a resolution or suggest a fix? Do I need to check the engine compartment fuse box? Could it be the mirrors fuse blowing cause the OBD issue (and if so, are the mirrors' motor(s) the culprit?)?

Thanks,

Brian

Side mirror fuse is a good suspect here, the fuse will probably be a little 5amp. Pop one in at the local auto parts store and have them read your codes for free. Check the cigarette lighter fuse also.

I don't have any mini specific info. So I'd start with unplugging the mirror switch and testing for a change in resistance to GND from the fuse. I'd check for damage in any cables that move, the door hinges, seats, trunk lid, door entry sill. I'd check for damage around aftermarket additions.

20 bucks says water in the driver side footwell. Might not be able to feel it but could be a little under the carpet padding. The body harness connection is there and the 1st wire to corrode is the obd power wire.

Mirror fuse blows right when I turn the ignition over. All other fuses are intact, including cig lighter. The only thing wrong with cig lighter is the orange ring never lights up. Suspect?

How would I go about pulling carpet up to check for water damage.

Thanks for all the replies!

Not all minis had the light in the 12v socket. They did it for a while, stopped, then started up again. Mine does not have said light :( made wiring to a switched light source challenging

Update....

Removed both side mirrors completely and fuse still blows. Looked at driver's side baseboard wiring underneath rubber and molding and no sign of water damage. And still no other blown fuses.

Any suggestions? I'm getting desperate and to the point of taking it to the shop and forking out the dough :(

Do I trace the wires from mirrors to fuse box and see where it intersects with other wires? Or do I buy a ton of fuses and test one by one by removing all non-required fuses to start car and add to see which one(s) make the mirror fuse go pop?

Thanks!

The OBD socket is connected to fuses F3 and F36 according to a couple places I have found. Search brought up a few pages linked below. One guy did mention the OBD wires run under the carpet, wonder if you have a short in one of them?

You're gonna need a mutltimeter. Schematic is here. http://www.bmw-planet.com/diagrams/ You can search for the fuses to see the diagram of where it goes to physically. Yo will need Adobe SVG viewer and JAVA

Did you use the British site, rather than the American one?

I did (US Flag then to the R50, Component and Signal Information, F_Fuses, F3 and also tried F35 which is my blown).

I did google find http://www.bmw-planet.com/lib/mini/WIRING.pdf which I suspec t is the same.

I appreciate the link! I'm suspecting that my problem lies on page 102 of the pdf I linked, which is the GRN/BLU wire behind the molding. Time to trace the wire :(

No it's not the same thing, and the schematics should be available under the GB flag.
