2013 Countryman DRL LED bulbs

Ok, Ive searched (I know the rules). But it seems that every thread is either lacking a bit of pertinent info...or strays off the subject like a lot of post tend to do.

So...I will attempt to stay on target with my requests.

I DO NOT have Fog lights. Just the lamps installed with the upper half housing the DRL bulb.

I want LED bulbs in there....like the current Prius look.

Can someone reccomend the following:

A bulb model that looks good.
Tips on the installation.
Any coding or error code possibilities.

Thanks!

A good place to start. I assume you are talking about the lower lights that are split into 2 separate housings?

yes thank you. the lower lights in the foglight "holes". The top half is the only bulb in there...from what I can see. I would like a very bright LED to be installed in this location. However the "Googleing"I have done has shown some very dim applications.

If you just want to replace the bulb with a brighter LED then go pull the bulb. Look at the size (I forget because I did mine long ago). And then search for error-free LED bulbs in that size.

With the error-free you do not need to worry about any codes or issues. Like I said I forgot what size they are but I used the same search criteria and ordered. Also go with ones that have LED diodes on all sides so that the light is fired all around.

They have been in since March of 2012 with no issues.

Good luck!

The bulb that is in there is a 5w5/T10/ect.ect. And can be found in the link I posted above. You have your choice of colors as well. All of which will work well with our CANBUS crap.

I used THESE bulbs:

Superbrightleds.com part number: WLED-CWHP15-T (cool white matches the xenons perfectly). NOTE: these LEDs DO NOT contain load resistors so you need to code-out the warm and cold bulb checks from the FRM module.

Were these just plug and play? Was there any coding that needed to be done?

Was there any coding necessary or were they just plug and play?

Note: they do flicker on car start up, but no other problems.

The one from the link I posted, you will not have to code any light checks out. The ones Koopah posted, you will need to code out light checks.

Yes. Mile-high 4X4 is correct. I had to code-out the warm and cold bulb checks with my LEDs. There were so many other features I wanted to enable by coding (key fob close, weather radio, unlock all doors on key eject, silence the key gong, 7 flashes instead of 3 for lane changing, etc.), so it was a no-brainer for me.

BTW - the flickering upon start up is a normal part of the bulb check process. It even does it on my (coded-out) R60. I believe the coding-out does not stop the bulb checks, just allows the FRM module to ignore the result.

Pretty darn easy:

1. Jack up the MINI using the jack point under the rocker toward the front wheel arch;

2. You will see two three-point, twist-off cover panels in the leading side of the fender well -- twist the lower one off;

3. Reach inside toward the top of the fog/city light housing and twist out the city light bulb carrier;

4. Remove the old light and insert the new LED;

5. BEFORE PUTTING THE CARRIER BACK IN, make sure the LED lights -- if not, rotate the bulb 180º and re-insert in the carrier then test again;

6. Button everything up and go to the other side;

7. Rinse and repeat.

NOTE: If your arms and wrists are flexible enough (think: Gumby), you may not need to jack up the MINI. Turn the wheels toward the opposite side that you're working on and see if you have enough access.

I didn't need to jack mine up. I just turned the steering wheel all the way to one side, changed bulb, and then turned the wheel the other way.

So they will still flicker at start up when coded...will they work at all in not coded ?
Any suggestion on a led that may nod nead coding....ECS tuning has the silver bulb... Less offensive then the orange bulb... But much rather go with a bright led style...

4500k, 5k, or 8k? I would like to have the light be as consistent as possible, while being the same color. And will they work the same if you have the fogs instead of just the parking lights?

Xenons are in the 6000º CCT range, Halogens are in the 4000º range. Select a color temperature that comes close to your headlamps. Pay attention to the CCT rating of the bulb colors. There are usually two versions of white: cool/bright white is roughly in the 6000º range while warm white is in the 3300º CCT range. Of course, these numbers vary based on the SMD manufacturer. The specs should provide you with the manufacturer's CCT data.

Yes. The city lights are on a different circuit.

Yes. But it's roughly 6 flickers and then all flickering is done...even when coded-out. Thus, my assertion that coding-out does not stop the bulb check process, it only allows the result to be ignored. One last point about coding out the bulb checks: after coding, you must routinely check your lights as you will not get a warning from the car if an LED malfunctions. Fortunately, the build quality of the better LED bulbs seems to be quite good.

Well, yes -- but you will have an annoying "bulb out" icon on your tach and there will be that infernal dinging...

52804x4 posted a link about 12 posts ago for a bulb that should not require coding.

Thanks guys....for the info.
At least I have a choice of 52814x4's with resistor's at $19.95 for the pair..or
Koopah's Superbrights @ 12.95 each but need coding. Either way sounds as I'll get some flickering at start-up......

Quite possibly the easiest installation I've done in a long time. No jack required. The AZN Optics
LED's look great. I just wish there were more than 1 bulb in each location. Brighter is better....

I have mine DIY with 90 LEDs stripe into the housing and is wired to the position lights. It will turn on when ever I lock and unlock the car. The pic below is without turning on the xenon.. its just the LEDs.

Did the install of the LED's, same as Koopah used. Pretty simple as everyone stated but had to jack the car up a bit due to the 19" summer treads. Surprisingly no flickering but........
"Well, yes -- but you will have an annoying "bulb out" icon on your tach and there will be that infernal dinging". I was forewarned
Now what to do with the ugly fog light bulb in the lower socket

I also had no flickering after installing the AZN Optics LEDs. No dash alert either...but I also do not have factory fog lights therefore the LEDs were not monitored by the system.

Roy - That looks great. I have wanted to do that since before I took delivery. Was it hard to get the headlight housings apart?

I always thought that those 8 little light ports should have been LEDs straight from the factory.
