Is a 2012 better than a 2011?

Hey all,

About to start looking for a CPO CMS4 Auto. Since 2011 was the first MY, should I avoid it and focus my efforts on a 2012 or was BMW/Mini that good at getting it right the first time?

I would suggest a late model 2012. Just as with the R53, the 2006 is the most sought after year because it was the most reliable. There were quite a few unhappy owners of the 2011 R60. It takes a couple years for the "bugs" to be worked out.

A 2012 is probably safer bet than a 2011 and a 2013 would be a safer bet than a 2012.
That being said it seems most of the early teething issues have been handled via recall / service bulletin so you should be OK - especially if you get the automatic.
The CM is the first and only car where I would think someone getting the automatic instead of a manual has made the better choice.

^ +1 to what FredoinSF said... except I think you are safe with a manual in the 2013s since MINI changed the clutch.

Want the clutch issue only regarding the All4?

Yes. The clutch was primarily an All4 issue. It couldn't handle the torque necessary to drive all four wheels.

Also, keep in mind that 2013 saw the change from window switches in the center stack to the driver's door. Some people like it, some do not. The choice is yours, but if you like the switches in the console, a '12 is the way to go. If you like them in the door, a '13 is for you.

Do you (the community) find this to be true? Were all of the early adopter issues from the 2011's resolved through recall's/service bulletin's? With that being said, the 2011's are going for some reasonable coin.

I don't know if all the 2011 issues have been solved, but I'm very happy with my 2011 CMSA4. I've had the coolant temp sensor, timing belt tensioner and lumbar support replaced under warranty.

I still need to do the software update for the 'stumbling' issue, but it happens pretty rarely, so it hasn't been a priority.

I haven't experienced the 'smelly clutch' issue. That said, I don't like the clutch feel ... I'm just not ready to sign the 'one-time only' courtesy replacement contract. The Oxspeed BOV spring has helped, and I'm going to try the torque arm inserts next.

Unfortunately, I think it really depends on your dealership.....meaning some on this forum have gone through "hell and back" just to get them to listen, never mind tend to there needs. I've gone through all the updates, recalls, stumble update and in the end was still not comfortable with the clutch feel and operation and eventually asked for the newer style. Replaced and All is good....never had to sign off on anything. For me, as most others that has been my biggest challenge but my dealership/service team has made it as unpainful as possible. Anyone can sell you a car....it's those with a great service team that will make your mini motoring expeierence amazing
Now.... If you want to bring up the whole armrest/snap-in phone cradle dilemma....thats been a long exhausting learning experience....
My advice, whether it's a 11, 12 or a 2013...getting the best price unfortunately doesn't mean the best service....shop service as well.

Armrest is fine.....If you did not order the cradle with connected...no need to be concerned.
