I know my car eats a bit of oil but...

I have had my 2007 Mini Cooper S for about a year and a half now.

Generally I check my oil every 1,000 miles and put about 1/2 quart into her.
This last time it took a whole quart.

I am thinking I will start check the oil every 500 miles.

Is this normal or should I be worried!

No Leaks or problems that I know of.

It is normal according to MINI.
However, I think that it is wrong for MINI to argue that burning a quart of oil every 500-1000 miles is normal.

A quart every 1000 miles is considered acceptable by all car manufacturers. Every 500 miles, would be excessive.

I normally check my oil every week (about 300 miles), and used to put in 1/4-1/2 quart every week. I read in another thread to let the oil get lower on the dipstick to reduce consumption, and that works for me. Instead of me topping it to the upper bulb on the dipstick, I only bring it 1/2 way between the top and lower bulb. just by making that change, my oil consumption has dropped to about 1/2 quart every 1000 miles.

I feel comfortable doing this because I check the oil frequently.

I also replaced my valve cover recently, this was a pretty significant leak at several places around the cylinder head.

That is very bad.

I would honestly think about selling or trading in your car. You've got a sloppily built engine.

My car is also a 2007 MCS with low mileage (26,000), that I have owned since new. I check the oil level once a month, and have the oil changed once a year, and have never had to top it off.

I have a 07 MCS with 35,000 miles and I add a quart every 1000 miles too. I also enjoy driving my car very spiritedly. I'm running Royal Purple 5w30. I Change the oil every 7k.

My 08 has 92,000 miles on it and depending on how hard I drive, I add about half a quart of oil per tank of gas.

only had my mini about a month, filled up twice. Checked oil each time and so far its still full. Oil is a little dirty, not sure how old though the tag says to change @ 65k. Might do it a little sooner just so I know how many miles are on the oil.

I have a 07 MCS with 37000 miles and I put 1 q every 800 miles. I'm using RP 5w30 but I do notice it consumes a lot more oil after tune. Don't know if that is normal.

Check the PCV... A stuck PCV when mingled with a turbo will suck a ton of oil into the intake.

I have to say this matches my experience, roughly. Changing the oil every 5 or 6k, I find that the oil quickly (in few weeks) drops to 1/2 way between the bulbs and then stabilizes. I check every other fill-up or so, and haven't had to add oil between changes.

Had my oil feed line to the turbo and the oil filter housing replaced when I had the timing chain work done.
